| Riverside Christian brings Klickitat's playoff run to an end |
|---|
By Sverre Bakke A nine-run outburst in the fourth inning helped Riverside Christian defeat Klickitat, 13-3, last Saturday and capture the Yakima Valley District's one berth in the state Class 2B baseball tournament. Riverside (11-10) will play a state first-round game on Saturday afternoon in Walla Walla. Klickitat finished its season at 10-12. The Vandals fell behind 1-0 in the district title game, which got under way at noon at Yakima's High School. But Kris Wood (2 for 3) drove in one of two runs for Klickitat with a single in the top of the fourth that gave the Vandals a shortlived lead. It was brief because the Crusaders followed in their half of the inning with the game-changing rally that chased Klickitat starter Jeromie Mason from the mound. Riverside protected the lead through the efforts of Tyler Doornink, who handcuffed Klickitat on five hits and struck out eight, and an offense that produced three insurance runs in the fifth and sixth frames. Brock Roberts, who had two of the Crusaders' 15 hits, knocked in four runs and Jason Bjur was 3 for 3 with two runs batted in for Riverside, which earned its shot at a state berth by defeating Lyle, 9-5, last Tuesday in a district semifinal game in Lyle.
District Semifinals Klickitat reached the title game by upsetting defending state 2B champion La Salle, 4-0, in a district semifinal played on May 6 in Yakima. Right-hander Jeromie Mason tossed a three-hitter for Klickitat in that game, which the Vandals won by scoring two runs in the fifth and two in the seventh against Lightning ace and GCB player of the year Robbie Alter. Seth Davis and Kris Wood each knocked in runs for the Vandals, who collected six hits on the day and played errorless defense in support of Mason. In the day's other semifinal contest, Riverside Christian jumped on host Lyle (14-7) early and led 7-0 before the Cougars got a run on the board. Lyle tried to make the game more competitive with a four-run rally in the home half of the fifth that pulled it within 9-5. But outstanding pitching by Riverside's Tyler Doornink and Lyle's Mike Eiesland (in relief of starter Cord Cothren) ensured the score would remain unchanged the rest of the way. Doornink struck out seven and allowed seven hits in a complete-game effort. His mates backed him up with 10 hits and committed just one error in the field. Derek Byrne had two hits and drove in three runs for the Crusaders, and Isaac Bass homered and knocked in two. Cothren paced Lyle at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two runs batted in. |
