By Sverre Bakke Prep Softball: Columbia High senior Dani Gilderhus earned All-Trico Division honorable mention for her play during the 2006 fastpitch season. She was the only CHS player recognized by Trico coaches. Collegiate Track & Field: Trout Lake High School graduate Peter Schmid recently completed his first season as a member of Cedarville University's men's team. Schmid was part of a Yellow Jacket squad that won the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) indoor championship, placed third at the outdoor championships and finished 34th out of 102 teams at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics outdoor championships. Schmid, a freshman undeclared major at the Ohio school, posted a season-best effort of 52.34 seconds in the 400 meters to place 11th at the American Mideast Conference Championships. He finished fourth in the event at the Anderson University Invitational with a 53.01 performance. Moreover, Schmid was one of four freshmen on Cedarville's 4x100-meter relay team that recorded a season-best time of 44.37 to place fifth at the NCCAA outdoor championships. Prep Football: Former Columbia High head coach Scott Ross has been named head coach at The Dalles Wahtonka High School, according to a report in The Dalles Chronicle. Ross, who teaches history at Columbia and lives in Dallesport, served as CHS's head coach for two seasons (2003-04, 6-14 record) and was the team's defensive coordinator from 1998-2002. He resigned as head coach last August, a week before CHS's 2005 season-opener, citing burnout and personal commitments as reasons for stepping down. Ross takes over an Eagle Indians program that is moving from Oregon Class 4A to 5A next fall. He replaces Arthur Smith and is the school's third coach since The Dalles and Wahtonka merged three years ago. Ross, 46, brings 21 years of coaching experience--all at Washington high schools--to the TDW program. Basketball Camp: Columbia High boys head coach Scott Kasenga will direct White Salmon Community Youth's third annual summer basketball skills camp for boys and girls entering grades 4-7 next school year. The cost of the camp is $25 and includes a camp logo shirt. It will run for five days, July 10-14, in Columbia High School's Miller Memorial Gym. To register, call (541) 490-6234, by July 3. Checks made payable to White Salmon Basketball Association should be sent to Diane Crumpacker, Box 1189, White Salmon, Wash. 98672. Prep Volleyball: The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has selected four sites for the 2006 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington State Volleyball Championships: 1B, Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane; 2B, Eastern Washington University, Cheney; 1A and 2A, Sun Dome, Yakima; 3A and 4A, Toyota Center, Kennewick. In February, the WIAA announced all six championships would be played the same weekend in November 2006 at the Tacoma Dome. It was supposed to be a showcase event for the state's girl athletes, similar to the WIAA's Emerald City Kickoff Classic for football. The Tacoma Dome, however, booked an event that displaced the all-classification championships and forced WIAA to split the tournaments up once again. "The WIAA is disappointed the Tacoma Dome could not accommodate an all-classification tournament that would highlight our female student-athletes," said WIAA executive director Mike Colbrese. "Fortunately," he added, "we have great support for WIAA events across the state and these sites will continue to do a great job of featuring our high school teams and the tournament." The 2006 state volleyball tournaments will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-11. |
