State high school powerlifting championships return to White Salmon
By Sverre Bakke
Powerlifting: The 2008 Washington State High School Powerlifting Championships will be held this Saturday, May 31, in Columbia High School's Miller Memorial Gym.
Lifting in 20 weight classes (10 for girls, 10 for boys) will commence at 10 a.m. with the squat competition. Bench press and dead lift competitions will follow.
Trophy presentations will take place shortly after the conclusion of the last event.
Host Columbia High's girls team will be trying to regain the state title it lost to Montesano back in 2004--a setback that snapped the CHS girls' string of six consecutive championships.
Montesano teams have won the last four girls and boys championships.
Gymnastics: The Gorge Gymnastics Booster Club will put on a three-hour "Fantastic Gymnastics" clinic next Friday, June 6, at the Hood River Sports Club.
The clinic, from 5 to 8 p.m., is for boys and girls ages 6-10. The cost is $30 per child.
Sign-up and release forms for this clinic are available at the Hood River Sports Club, 1330 Brookside Dr., in Hood River.
Trapshooting: The Mid-Columbia Trap Club's annual Gorge Cactus Classic Shoot will take place on Saturday, June 7, at the club's shooting grounds in Dallesport.
Competition will begin at 9 a.m. and feature four events: 50 single targets, 50 handicap targets, Follow the Leader and the 60-bird Jim Akita Appreciation Backer.
The club's shooting grounds are located off Dallesport Road. From the north, turn right off U.S. 197; from the south, take the first left after crossing The Dalles Bridge.
Hiking: The Klickitat Trail Conservancy's last hike of its 2008 Spring Hike Series will be a National Trails Day event on Saturday, June 7.
Planned is a hike from Klickitat to Pitt and back (6 miles roundtrip), depending on the weather. Laura Bales, Laurie Wilhite and Cheryl Steindorf will lead the hike.
Participants are asked to meet at the Lyle Trailhead at 9:30 a.m. or at the Pitt Trailhead at 10.
