On May 13, 1942, at 9:30 a.m., 70 years ago, local Hood River County Japanese American residents were forcibly evacuated from Hood River in response to Executive Order 9066 authorized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This was following and in response to events at Pearl Harbor. The History Museum of Hood River County was recently awarded a grant from the Gorham Babson Family Fund of the Gorge Community Foundation, to create and install a sign recognizing this event and this sad day.

One-man band hits White Salmon, Trout Lake in May

Portland, Ore.,-based Americana/folk-rock one man band McDougall will hit the road to support his forthcoming full-length, "A Few Towns More," set for national release April 10. He will be performing at Everybody's Brewing in White Salmon on May 18 and at the Trout Lake Country Inn on May 19. Equal parts folk, Americana, and old-time country, McDougall's music conjures up images of sitting by a coffee-can fire in the middle of a dry California river-bed that then pulls you up on a freight train that travels through the lush spring-time of the Pacific Northwest, with you ending up rambling around the country with all your possessions on your back.

Author on hand for book release party

Waucoma Bookstore and Solstice Woodfire Cafe are hosting an author reading and book release party for Get Your Pitchfork On! on Tuesday, May 15, at Solstice Wood Fire Cafe in Bingen. The book reading starts at 6:30 p.m., and Solstice is offering all you can eat pizza for $10 (doors open at 5). Author Kristy Athens will be discussing her new book Get Your Pitchfork On!: The Real Dirt on Country Living. For hard-working office workers Kristy Athens and husband Michael, farming was a romantic dream. After purchasing farm land in Oregon's beautiful Columbia Gorge, Athens and hubby were surprised to learn that the realities of farming were challenging and unexpected. Get Your Pitchfork On! provides the hard-learned nuts-and-bolts of rural living from city folk who were initially out of their depth. Practical and often hilarious, Get Your Pitchfork On! reads like a twenty-first century Egg and I.

Gorge residents join global day of action on climate change

On May 5 Gorge area residents are invited to join with thousands of communities around the world to "connect the dots" between climate change and extreme weather conditions People of all ages will gather at sites in fire ravaged Australia, drought stricken Texas, tornado wracked areas in the Midwest, Himalayan communities threatened by glacier melt and thousands of other locations to put a human face on climate change and demonstrate the urgent need for a shift away from the burning of coal, oil and gas. "Our best and brightest scientists tell us that the burning of these fuels is emitting carbon dioxide into our atmosphere, which is trapping heat and causing extreme weather conditions throughout the planet," said Vicky Stifter, an event organizer. "Wildfires are fiercer, violent storms are more frequent and nations across the globe are setting all time high temperature records. We need to wake up to this reality and change course now…there is no time to waste."

What's in the sky -- May

By JIM WHITE Welcome to May! Along with spring flowers, hopefully the month will bring us warmer weather and a few more clear days and nights. Cross your fingers that one of those clear days will be May 20. On that day, we'll be treated to a partial solar eclipse. On that Sunday afternoon, the Moon will cover about 70 percent of the Sun. It's the first solar eclipse we've had since June, 2002, when about half of the sun was blocked by the Moon.

Fire District No. 3 licenses ambulance, adds to services

Klickitat County Fire Protection District No. 3 recently announced that it has completed the licensing process for its ambulance. The ambulance, which is housed at Fire Station 31 in Husum, is now licensed for Basic Life Support (BLS) operations. Medic 16 as it will be known serves residents of Husum, BZ Corner, Snowden, Mountain Brook and the urban growth area of White Salmon. Fire District No. 3 Capt. Mike Renault began the licensing process nearly a year ago with a complete review of the ambulance inventory and an assessment of needs to meet the state's BLS licensing requirements. Working with a budget of just $3,500, Renault was able to acquire the necessary equipment and supplies to meet the inventory requirements for BLS operations. He ended the project with $12 remaining in his budget -- a testament to his diligence in meeting the goal of the Fire District, which is to provide the highest level of service to the community at the best possible price.

The Gorge Winds Concert Band has ordered up some good weather on Sunday, May 6. The program will include "Valdres," an old Norwegian march; a series of four gypsy dances by Jan Van der Roost; a medley of four swingin' big band tunes from the 40s; Leroy Anderson's "Belle of the Ball;" a fine march and an equally interesting ragtime tune, both from about 1905; and Crown Imperial march written by William Walton as the processional to commemorate the crowning of England's King George VI in 1937. Subsequently, it was performed in 1953 for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

They are miraculously revived for a posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that never was. CAST is seeking actors for the 4 main roles:

Waucoma hosts author reading at WS library

Waucoma Bookstore and the White Salmon Library are hosting author Katherine Schlick Noe for a book reading and signing at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the White Salmon Library. Noe will be discussing her children's novel "Something to Hold", which was inspired by her childhood experiences living on the Warm Springs Reservation. It's 1962 and Kitty has just turned eleven when Dad's government job moves the family all the way across the country to the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Oregon. She knows how to be "the new kid," but it's a whole new kind of starting over this time.

Governor signs Honeyford PUD power-generating bill into law

Gov. Christine Gregoire signed Senate Bill 6044 into law on March 30, allowing investors to construct water-pump storage facilities along the Columbia River to generate electricity and help balance out the power generated by area wind farms. Sen. Jim Honeyford, R- Sunnyside, is pleased by the support his bill had throughout the process. "At no point during this legislative session did my bill encounter any resistance, which is always a good sign," Honeyford remarked after the bill signing. "Both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed it unanimously and the governor had no reason to veto any part of it."

Commissioners to take comments about Husum/BZ sub-area plan

A revised sub-area plan for the Husum/BZ Corner Planning Area will be the subject of a Klickitat County Board of Commissioners public hearing today at the Pioneer Center. The proposal contains amendments to zoning designations in the Husum/BZ Planning Area -- including the shifting of the 1,100 acres from the Resource Lands district into other zones -- as well as a Pilot Forest, Farming and Ranching Resource Protection Project. Today's hearing will run from 4 to 8 p.m., in the Senior Services dining room. Commissioners will be taking testimony on the proposed amendments and resource protection project only. Last October the Planning Department issued an addendum to the Husum-BZ Corner Sub-area Plan Update that clarified the county's requirements and narrowed the scope of the proposal. The county began working on a 10-year update for the 50,560-acre planning area -- which encompasses approximately 79 square miles -- in 2007 but had its initial effort appealed by Friends of the White Salmon River that same year, following the Planning Department's issuance of a determination of non-significance per the State Environmental Policy Act. The Commissioners heard the appeal, then remanded the matter to the Planning Department for further analysis of water resources.

New law for drunk drivers

Driving drunk with a child in the car will soon cost drivers more. Much more. A new law signed Friday, March 16, by Gov. Chris Gregoire requires courts to impose an additional $1,000 to $5,000 fine for first-time DUI offenders if a child under age 16 is in the vehicle at the time of the offense -- with stiffer penalties for repeat offenders. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Roger Goodman (D-Kirkland), also triples the amount of time an alcohol-detecting ignition-interlock device must be on the offenders' vehicles, from 60 days to six months. Plus, the offender is automatically reported to Child Protective Services.

What's in the sky

By JIM WHITE Our first full month of spring will be a good time to look skyward. Mars is still prominent in the evening sky, and Saturn makes its closest approach to Earth for 2012. Enjoy the warmer evenings, and hopefully a bit more clear weather, and check out the night skies. And we should experience more clear skies in April than in March. Data for Trout Lake show that April nights are clear about 25 percent of the time, and that skies are 80 percent clear about 35 percent of the time. We can hope!
