Skyline CEO wants to clear up misconceptions caused by birthing center closure<BR>

In this week's edition of The Enterprise, we're carrying a story that was published in the April 17 edition of the Hood River News about a Snowden family who raced to Providence Memorial Hospital in Hood River the morning of April 14 to have a baby that was arriving much sooner than expected. According to the story (see page XX), the family ran stop signs, sped, drove the wrong way down Dock Grade Road (to be fair, it used to be a two-way road not that long ago), and blew through the tollbooth on the Hood River Bridge in a desperate attempt to get to Providence, because &quot;there's no longer a maternity ward at Skyline (Hospital) in White Salmon.&quot; Ultimately, the child was born happy and healthy on the shoulder of State Street in Hood River. However, Skyline Hospital CEO Robb Kimmes says the family didn't have to go to such great lengths and fears families on the Washington side of the Gorge are unaware that Skyline still has the capability to deliver babies even without a birthing center.

This is the 9th annual Fusion event in White Salmon scheduled for July 27. Artists display their work, local wineries offer tastings and musicians perform on Jewett Blvd. in downtown White Salmon. A letter from downtown business owner James Kacena dated April 8 prompted a discussion regarding perceived roadblocks to development and investment in the Commercial District. Kacena noted in his letter that he had attended a Business Partners planning meeting on April 2 at which City Councilor George Rau led a discussion &quot;about some proposed ordinances to encourage downtown building owners to improve the appearance of their buildings.&quot;

Henkle fifth-grader Flavio Trejo places 11th in State Geography Bee

On April 5, middle school students from all over the state of Washington competed in the state level of the National Geographic Bee. The competitors earned a place in the state competition by winning their school's geography bee and then passing a written test. Fifth-grade student Flavio Trejo represented Henkle Middle School at the state bee in Tacoma. Flavio completed against 110 fourth- through eighth-grade students and finished an impressive 11th place. This was a great accomplishment for Flavio, especially considering that the majority of the competitors were seventh- and eighth-graders. This year's state winner was a seventh-grade student named Owen Benda from Open Window School in Bellevue. State winners advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C., in May.

Can't you just chase them away? The man with the answers to these and many other sea lion-related questions will be at the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum in Stevenson on April 21. Bjorn van der Leeuw, a wildlife and fisheries biologist with the US Army Corps of Engineers at Bonneville Dam, will give a presentation on the Corps' sea lion program beginning at 2 p.m. in the museum's DeGroote Theater.

Lions Follies returns with wacky western

The Mid-Columbia Lions Follies will present &quot;The Wacky Wild West&quot; as its 37th annual show. Dates are April 11, 12, and 13, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Hood River Middle School Auditorium. The show uses the old-time westerns as its base, including characters from Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Big Valley, and the Lone Ranger. The story takes place in a fictional town called Beverly Gulch, Nev. This opens the door for the housewives and hillbillies of Beverly Gulch to take over. As chaos clashes with the law, an upcoming town festival and a large payroll shipment, the story unfolds.

White Salmon native speaks with heaven

Jeffrey Marks was born in this White Salmon in 1970. It was here where he took his first steps, learned how to ride a tricycle -- and unwittingly saw his first alleged spirit. &quot;It was dark, but I could see the form walking by my bed. All of a sudden, it darted toward me as if it was going to hurt me,&quot; Marks said. The attack never came, as he buried himself under the covers and waited for morning. It wasn't the first time he had seen such things.&quot;I always heard footsteps by my bed, no matter where we lived.&quot;

Gorge Grown Food Network invites the public to come meet local farmers and ranchers at the 2nd annual CSA Farm Open House at Dog River Coffee in Hood River on Wednesday, April 17, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. CSA is short for Community Supported Agriculture -- an innovative way to purchase local food that has risen in popularity in the last decade. By operating with the CSA model, farms invite their customers to become &quot;members&quot; for the season. CSA members are subscribed to weekly boxes of whatever is seasonal and fresh. The upfront subscription fee provides farmers with early season cash flow, and it makes local food easily accessible.

 By the GLENWOOD HOMEMAKERS What a gorgeous area we live in! The grass is greening up and starting to grow for the cattle and wildlife. The daffodils are showing off their bright yellow hats; and the trees are budding up and promising to start sprouting leaves!
Wildfire season officially starts

Regardless of the wet, rainy spring, wildfire season officially begins April 15, as specified by state law. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wants to remind people that the risk of wildfires can change rapidly during the spring when warmer, drier weather occurs with increasing frequency. Wildfires can damage natural resources, destroy homes, and threaten the safety of the public and the firefighters who protect forests and communities. As of April 8, seventeen forest fires have already been reported this year on lands protected by DNR. During last year, a total of 794 fires burned approximately 68,347 acres. In 2012, 94 percent of the wildfires that burned on DNR-protected lands were contained to less than 10 acres in size. Overall, 79 percent of the wildfires on DNR-protected lands in 2012 were human-caused.

State to celebrate Vietnam vets

Next March 30, the state of Washington will celebrate its first Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day to recognize those who served in and returned home from the Vietnam War, and to honor those service members who are still unaccounted for by the U.S. military. Legislation introduced in the Legislature on Jan. 23 -- by 14th Dist. Rep. Norm Johnson (R-Yakima) and co-sponsored by 36 others -- passed the 98-member House of Representatives on Feb. 20, by a vote of 97-0. It cleared the Senate on March 25 by a vote of 48-0, with one member not voting. Gov. Jay Inslee signed the bill into law last Friday during a signing ceremony in the governor's conference room. That was followed by readings of a resolution recognizing and honoring Vietnam veterans for their service to the country, in the House and the Senate. Moreover, recognition ceremonies were held on Friday in Olympia, at the State Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Capitol campus, and at the Veterans Center in Spokane. Hundreds of veterans attended the Olympia ceremony, where they were greeted by fellow citizens, &quot;Welcome Home!&quot;

I have implemented a new driving while suspended program and digital filing system. I have become a Certified Child Abuse Forensic Investigator and have been appointed by the Governor to the Washington State Forensic Counsel. My office is prevailing in criminal prosecutions and increasing sentences for violent offenders. My administration continues to save you, the taxpayer, money. My office is continuing to build strong working relations with law enforcement to ensure successful prosecutions and community safety. I am constantly striving to make my administration stronger and more responsive to the specific needs of our community. If you have questions or concerns, I encourage you to stop by for a chat.
Henkle Knowledge Bowl team finishes as league champs

Henkle Middle School's Knowledge Bowl team emerged from the 2013 season as league champions. Even more remarkable is the fact that, over the course of the last two years, it has never lost even a single game within each match. The league consists of 10 schools where each school brings three teams to a match. Each match consists of three to four schools competing to answer trivia questions related to science, history, the arts and literature.

Scam targeting NW Natural customers

Northwest Natural Gas Company wants gas customers to be alert for a new scam that's circulating. Scammers call customers claiming to be from NW Natural. The scammers tell the customer they have a past due payment that needs to be paid immediately with cash to avoid having gas shut off. The caller directs the customer to go to a Western Union and then call back for details on where to wire the cash payment. Over the past three weeks, seven different NW Natural customers, mostly minority-owned businesses in the Portland area, reported receiving the scam phone call. None of the customers contacted had past due accounts.

State, PUD in litigation over fire costs

The Washington Department of Natural Resources and Public Utility District No. 1 of Klickitat County are in litigation over the state's claim that the PUD owes the DNR more than $1.6 million in fire suppression and investigation costs stemming from two fires that started on Aug. 26, 2010, along Old Highway 8, near Lyle. Asst. Attorney General Michael J. Rollinger of the AG's Natural Resources Division filed the DNR &quot;complaint to recover fire suppression costs&quot; against the PUD in Klickitat County Superior Court on June 28, 2012. PUD attorney Dan Short, of the Spokane firm Paine Hamblen, replied with a denial of all DNR claims in an answer filed on Aug. 3, 2012. The state initiated the cost recovery process related to the Old Highway 8 Fire on Sept. 29, 2011, when it sent a &quot;demand letter&quot; to the PUD requesting payment of $1,607,553.29 within 30 days of the letter's date. The letter alleged the PUD was negligent and responsible for the fires because one stem of a double-topped Ponderosa pine tree outside the PUD's right-of-way fell across its power line that parallels Old Highway 8 during a high-wind day and caused fire to break out as a result of electrical arcing due to line-to-ground contact.

What's in the sky

 By JIM WHITE Welcome to April, the first full month of spring. The winter constellations of Orion and Taurus fade into the western sunset this month, while spring constellations Hercules and Bootes appear on the eastern horizon, and Leo the Lion takes center stage in the evening sky. And late in the month, the ringed planet Saturn makes its closest approach to us for 2013. A good month for stargazing! Once again, the month begins with the Moon in the morning sky. New Moon comes on April 9, with full Moon following on April 25. On April 14, the thin crescent Moon will join Jupiter and the bright star Aldebaran, low in the western sky after sunset. It should make an impressive sight.

County Commissioners last month awarded the bid for the 2013 Grandstand Roof and Structural Retrofit Project to lowest responsive bidder Black Rock Construction and Development, LLC, of Moses Lake. The winning bid was $217,556.68. All told, six contractors (five from Washington, one from Hood River) submitted bids for the project, which county engineers estimated would cost $297,000 to perform. First-half taxes (one half of the total bill) must be paid by April 30 to avoid incurring interest or penalty. &quot;We have had quite a few taxpayers call and ask what they are supposed to pay if their appeal has not been finalized, and they seem surprised that they have to pay the initial tax unless and until the appeal is either stipulated to or withdrawn,&quot; Treasurer Dani Burton said Monday in follow-up to a public service announcement issued March 10 by her office.

Stewards seeking public input on forest management

Mt. Adams Resource Stewards (MARS) will be hosting a forum to gather input on management of the Mt. Adams Community Forest on March 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Glenwood Grange. MARS will also provide an update on current efforts to purchase additional lands for the project. The Glenwood-based non-profit purchased 100 acres at the Glenwood Valley Mill Pond in 2011, and the property has already been extensively used for forestry, educational and recreational activities.

Help Mt. Adams Institute fill Peterson Prairie Cabin void

While the Cascade Creek Fire raged on the south slope of Mt. Adams, one misty morning brought news of an unrelated, but no less devastating structure fire. Locals, outdoors enthusiasts and forest employees all met this news with heavy hearts. &quot;When we heard about Peterson Prairie Guard Station burning down that morning we couldn't really believe it with everything else we had going on,&quot; said Mt. Adams Ranger District Recreation Program Manager, David Wickwire. &quot;We went right out to see, and I don't have to tell most who loved this place about the empty sinking feeling when I first saw it.&quot; Historic Peterson Prairie Guard Station was burned to the ground.

WASHINGTON NEWS SERVICE Call them scammers, swindlers, fraudsters, or grifters. But whatever you do, don't believe a word they say. Just like their counterparts over the ages convinced desperate dreamers to sink their savings into imaginary investments or lured lovesick loners into losing their family fortunes, today's scam artists prey on people's desires for love, money, or good luck, and walk away with their wallets.
