Timberwolves 49, Bruins 20

Playing catch up all night long wasn't what Columbia High had in mind when it kicked off its 2010 football opener at Goldendale's Barthlow Field last Friday. But three first-half fumbles, which the host Timberwolves converted into 21 points to stretch their lead to 35-0 with 5:54 to go before halftime, and sketchy execution had the Bruins doing just that. "The snowball got big and the hill got steep," Bruins Coach Larry McCutcheon said of the 35-6 first-half deficit CHS ran up against Goldendale en route to a 49-20 defeat.

GCB Volleyball

This prep volleyball season will feature a five-team race to the top in the Greater Columbia 1B League. The conference adds Lyle/Wishram to the mix in 2010, giving it another team to compete for the Yakima Valley District's single WIAA Class 1B tournament berth. (Lyle/Wishram was in Class 2B prior to the last WIAA reclassifications, which take effect this fall.) Last fall at district, Trout Lake/Glenwood and Klickitat slugged it out with Bickleton and Sunnyside Christian for the two state tourney berths available to the GCB. (The Valley shares a second state berth with the North Central District, on an alternating year basis.)

Autumn coming

It's amazing. School is back in session already, and autumn is nearly upon us once again. It seems we only had a couple weeks of real summer this year, and now we're blasting toward fall. Autumn officially beings on Sept. 23 this year. And if it's fall, that means football season is here. The Columbia High School Bruins football team has already opened its season -- on a losing note, unfortunately, after falling to Goldendale High School on Friday. But the season is still young, so here's to success over the rest of the 2010 campaign. September also brings the return of the annual (47th annual, in fact) Huckleberry Festival. We always know it's nearly autumn when the happy, dancing huckleberry signs begin popping up around town. Bingen's annual celebration -- this year, it's Sept. 10-12 -- is always a good time. And it's not logical, but isn't it interesting that so often, the weather in the Columbia River Gorge during the Huckleberry Festival in September is more enjoyable than what we get for White Salmon's Spring Festival in late May.

Council nixes KCSO police plan

The city of White Salmon apparently won't be contracting with the Klickitat County Sheriff's Office for police services any time soon. At the Sept. 1 meeting of the White Salmon City Council, the councilors voted unanimously to reject a proposal from Sheriff Rick McComas. At the beginning of the council session, White Salmon Mayor David Poucher explained that he, along with Bingen Mayor Betty Barnes, had met with Sheriff McComas about potentially contracting with KCSO.

Fire district stays neutral in lawsuit against county

Klickitat County Fire Commissioners in Fire District No. 3 are remaining neutral in a lawsuit filed by a group of residents seeking to withdraw from the fire district. In a filing with Superior Court in Klickitat County, the "Committee to Withdraw from Klickitat County Fire Protection District No. 3" asked the court "to compel compliance by the Klickitat County Board of Commissioners to set and hold a public hearing on petition to withdraw from Fire Protection District No. 3." The lawsuit comes in the wake of a decision by the Klickitat County Commissioners to not process the group's withdrawal petitions any further.

Longview Timberlands LLC property in Oregon and all property in Washington, except in Chelan County, will be reopened to public recreational entry. Blake Rowe, president, siad, "Recent rainfall and cool weather has reduced fire danger in most of our timberland. Conditions in Chelan County remain dry and fire danger remains too high to reopen our property in that area to public access at this time." Longview's timbers include acres in Klickitat and Skamania counties in Washington, and Hood River, Multnomah and Wasco counties in Oregon.

Skyline employees say yes to meeting space

Have you ever wanted to hold a meeting or a special event in Klickitat County and, instead, had to resort to using a venue across the river? It just so happens that Skyline Hospital has a spare 13,000-square feet of unused -- and unfinished space -- on the lower level of the new patient wing. The Skyline Foundation recognized the need for this space and the potential to serve both the community and the hospital. Because the hospital's funds are tied up paying off the new patient wing, the foundation decided to embark on its most ambitious fundraising project yet: to raise funds to create an inviting space in the hospital for patients, visitors, employees and community members to meet and eat.

Catlink gets grant for spay, neuter program

It will probably come as no surprise to cat lovers in the Columbia River Gorge that there is a huge population of free-roaming cats. In an effort to significantly reduce that population, PetSmart Charities recently awarded Catlink of The Dalles, a division of Rowena Wildlife Clinic, a $35,000 grant to fund spay/neuter clinics around the Gorge over the next two years. Catlink is an all-volunteer organization with a mission to spay and neuter as many cats as possible, as quickly as possible for the least amount of cost, while giving wild cats the best quality life possible and putting no animal at risk.

Four volunteers complete EMT training

Fire District #3 announces that four of the department's volunteers recently completed first responder Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training. Those completing the course of study were Miquitte Ihrig, Mike Renault, Denis Scannell and Dan Walker. To become certified EMTs, these dedicated volunteers spent 152 hours in training, over a period of four months. That, of course, does not include the many additional hours of home study necessary to learn the material.

Take tour of glacier

In attempt to learn more about the state of Mt. Hood's Newton-Clark glacier and the potential for more devastating debris flows in Newton Creek, US Forest Service geologist Tom DeRoo photographs the glacier and the upper Newton Creek valley annually. Since 2000, DeRoo has been monitoring this area for any changes that could have an effect on downstream infrastructure like roads and bridges. A few years ago, DeRoo agreed to allow the Hood River Watershed Group to join him on his trek up to near the glacier terminus to document changes. The hike is open to the public; however, space is limited and requires registration through Hood River Community Education.

Comics cross roads at Maryhill

For decades comics have largely been viewed as light-hearted and amusing stories told through simple line art. But in recent years, comics have moved from the cultural fringes into the artistic and literary mainstream. The Los Angeles Times recently added a Graphic Novel category to its slate of annual Book Prizes, citing the medium as "an expanding part of the book landscape, both aesthetically and commercially." Comics at the Crossroads: Art of the Graphic Novel, on view at Maryhill Museum of Art Sept. 18 - Nov. 15, showcases the work of 40 Pacific Northwest artists who are established stars and emerging lights in the comic art universe.

Mosier columnist and writer, Mary Soden, will be reading and signing her new book, "Original Moons: Those Who Pull The Earth," on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in the White Salmon Valley Community Library's Spring/Baker Gallery. Original Moons, based on a series of interviews from 1984 to 2007, follows the lives, accomplishments and challenges of four women trying to find their way in a culture in which the role of women was rapidly changing. The collection documents the process of the search for self. Soden hopes that by reading the book others will be encouraged to put pen to paper and document their own ever-changing story, and continue to ask themselves the important ongoing question: "Who can I be now?"

Port starts roadway project; detour planned

Changes are coming to the Port of Klickitat's Bingen Point business park starting Sept. 7. On that date, the Port will begin the "Harbor Drive Improvement Project," and a key section of road into the Port's facilities will be closed for an estimated seven weeks. Harbor Drive, which runs from Lakeview Street south to the traffic circle, will be closed during the project and all traffic will be routed along the west side of Bingen Harbor. "We recognize this closure will be an inconvenience to our tenants and visitors," said Port Executive Director Marc Thornsbury, "but it is necessary to allow the project contractor to complete the work in a timely fashion and while the weather is still suitable."

What's in the sky: September

By JIM WHITE September is probably my favorite stargazing month. Darkness comes earlier, and one doesn't have to stay up until 11 p.m. to see truly dark skies. Evenings are still pleasantly warm, and weather is generally still nice. The air is still dry, making for transparent skies. September also brings the first day of autumn, with the autumnal equinox falling on Sept. 22 this year. On that date the Sun is directly above the equator, and our day is almost equally divided between daylight and nighttime.

The Nathan Wellman Memorial Water Treatment Plant at Buck Creek is now serving water customers of the city of White Salmon. On Aug. 25, a group of nearly 50 gathered to dedicate the newly constructed water filtration plant, which employs sand filters to purify the water from Buck Creek. The $2 million water infrastructure project has been under active construction since June 2009, with design and engineering work ongoing for many months prior to that.

Falling tree sparks big wildfire near Lyle

At a little after noon on Thursday, Aug. 26, a fast-moving wildfire pushed by high winds rolled through tinder-dry vegetation north of Lyle and quickly became dangerous. Deputies with the Klickitat County Sheriff's Office went house to house to advise residents of the need to evacuate. People living in approximately 100 homes in the area were asked to be ready to leave at "a moment's notice," with those in another 40 residences asked to evacuate immediately due to the extreme danger. At one point on Thursday, approximately 50 houses were considered to be at risk of burning in the blaze. To accommodate potential evacuees, a Red Cross shelter was opened at the Lyle Lions Community Center on State Route 14.

At the end of a special filing period, nine candidates stepped forward to compete for a total of five spots on the proposed Mount Adams Park & Recreation District Board. The three-day filing period, from Aug. 23-25, was for positions that will only be created if voters approve a proposed parks and recreation district -- a measure that will appear on the Nov. 2 general election ballot. If the measure wins backing by the voters, the Mount Adams Park & Recreation District would cover a wide geographic area that encompasses White Salmon, Bingen, Lyle, Trout Lake, Klickitat, Husum, Snowden, Appleton, BZ Corner, Glenwood, and Dallesport.

WS artist Mayo shows work done `down under'

White Salmon sculptor John Mayo returned this summer from a six-month artist residency in Western Australia. Besides bringing back stories of a summertime Christmas and adventures in the Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean, Mayo has brought back a body of cast bronze artworks that he made while working with noted Australian sculptor Greg James. For Mayo, his wife, and his two children, the trip was more than a way to escape the Pacific Northwest winter. From November to May, the family lived in Fremantle, Australia. According to Mayo, this was long enough to develop a sense of place and build meaningful friendships as well as create a body of work reflective of the local culture and environment. Mayo set off for the residency, which culminated with a planned solo show, without any fixed ideas of what he would be working on.

The White Salmon Valley School District's board of directors created a vacancy in its ranks Aug. 18 when it accepted the resignation of Zone 2 representative Kristie Hurn "with great reluctance." Hurn, a Snowden-area resident, had to resign after it was discovered during research of director boundaries by district administrative staff that her residence is about half a mile outside the Zone 2 boundary. After the discovery, the school board and Supt. Jerry Lewis were advised by legal counsel to act swiftly to correct the "technical error."

First Indy to close Bingen branch

First Independent announced Thursday, Aug. 19, it will consolidate its network of branch offices from 19 to 16 in the coming months -- the three branches to be consolidated are Woodland, La Center and Bingen. ATMs and night drops will remain at all three locations. Although specifics vary by location, the primary reason for each closure is underutilization of the offices. First Independent's data shows that roughly one-third of the account holders in those branches never go into the branch. They may be using other branches nearer their current home, work or school, or they are taking advantage of First Independent's system of ATMs, telephone, online and other electronic banking options.

With removal of Condit Dam set to begin next fall, representatives of state and federal fish and wildlife agencies will hold a public meeting next Tuesday, Aug. 31, in Underwood to discuss the future of sport fisheries on the White Salmon River. The informational meeting, hosted by the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the Underwood Community Center in eastern Skamania County, off the Cook-Underwood Road. They both had previous experience with Toastmasters, and wanted to create an alternative to the 6:30 a.m. meeting time of the existing Hood River Club. The only other club in the area, the ScanEagle Club, limits membership to employees of Insitu.

A great tribute

Bravo to all those working on the planned military Walk of Honor that is about to see ground-breaking at the White Salmon Cemetery on Snowden Road. The project calls for a "V"-shaped, eight-foot wide concrete walkway that will feature two legs -- each about 200 feet long. A nine-foot tall monument rock will be placed at the center of the "V," with an American flag flying behind the rock. The walkway will honor any resident or former resident of Klickitat County who served in any branch of the military and was honorably discharged. Veterans or their families will be able to purchase bronze plaques to be placed in the walkway to honor them after they have passed away. The plaques will include the name, branch of service, dates of service, and rank of the veteran.

Getting work done in the forest

While high-profile Recovery projects like the installation of new bridges and high-tech interpretive upgrades get going throughout the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, young people continue to toil in summer heat on mountain trails for the public's safety and enjoyment. On the south end of the Gifford Pinchot on the Mt. Adams Ranger District, a crew from the Northwest Service Academy (NWSA) is renewing tread, installing check dams to limit water flowing down trails and beating the heat any way they can to get these jobs done for American tax-payers. ARRA Trail Projects Coordinator and Forestry Technician, John Cruse Kruse reported that this crew does not get to do the glorious stuff, but the bread-and-butter projects that sorely need completion. He said this is the stuff hikers notice, and they really like when they see the trails getting "dialed in."

In a recent review of Family Planning programs statewide, it was found that Klickitat County is not following the trend of reduced services. Carol C. Oakes, site consultant from Olympia said, "While Family Planning Programs in Washington State are seeing an across the board 3 percent decline, Klickitat County has experienced a 13 percent increase in services compared to the first half of last year." Kevin Barry, director for the county health department attributes this to the staff and high level of professional care given to clients at either of the two offices in Goldendale and White Salmon.

Underwood taken out of parks and rec district

The campaign to create a proposed "Mount Adams Parks & Recreation District" will now be a decision left exclusively to voters in the western end of Klickitat County. In the general election on Nov. 2, voters in a wide area of the county -- including White Salmon, Bingen, Lyle, Husum, BZ Corner, Trout Lake, Glenwood, Dallesport, Snowden, Appleton, and Klickitat -- will decide whether to create a regional parks and recreation district. Underwood and an area around Northwestern Lake in Skamania County had also been included within the original boundaries of the district, but on July 13 the Skamania County Commissioners voted 3-0 not to include any land in Skamania County in the district.

Parks commissioner applications available at courthouse

The Nov. 2 General Election ballot will contain two propositions related to the formation of the Mount Adams Parks and Recreation District: The first as to whether the district should be formed, the second to elect a governing body in the event the first passes. According to information put out by the Klickitat County Auditor's Office, the proposed district's boundary would encompass all areas of Trout Lake School District No. 400, Glenwood School District No. 401, Klickitat School District No. 402, Lyle School District No. 406 and White Salmon School District No. 405-17, all lying within Klickitat County. If voters approve the proposal establishing the parks and recreation district, the election of a five-member board of commissioners will be validated. (Final General Election results will be certified on Nov. 23.)

Election results

These are the incomplete and unofficial returns from the key, contested races in the Aug. 17 Primary Elections for Klickitat County and Skamania County. The "Top Two" finishers in each race advance to the General Election on Nov. 2. One exception to that rule could be the contest for Klickitat County East District Court Judge, in which Goldendale attorney Rick Hansen was winning with nearly 56 percent of the vote. If that lead stays above 50 percent through county certification on Sept. 1, Hansen will be declared the victor. Also of interest: Two-term incumbent Skamania County Prosecutor Peter Banks was running a weak fourth in a four-man primary; and, the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District tax levy was failing district-wide, 50.2 percent to 49.8 percent.

Cut services, pay more?

You certainly can't blame the Bingen City Council for being skeptical about the proposals being floated by the White Salmon City Council regarding law enforcement services. In the Aug. 3 special Joint session with members of both city councils, White Salmon seemed to be suggesting that Bingen should agree to slash the level of police services Bingen gets under the existing inter-local agreement -- and pay a lot more as well. What a deal! Currently, Bingen pays about 23.7 percent of the costs of the Bingen-White Salmon Police Department, a formula based on assessed property valuations of the two cities. Council members from White Salmon said they wanted Bingen to pay 50 percent of the costs.

Riding rails: Mondays in August

Part of the beauty of the Gorge is the constant movement of trains against the landscape. Everyone has train stories, but local historian/storyteller Jerry Tanquist has been recording them for 15 years, and presenting them at the Discovery Center. This month offers three audio-visual programs for history enthusiasts on Mondays at 1 p.m., featuring "The Great Southern Railroad" (Aug. 16), "Railroad Stories Along the Deschutes" (Aug. 23), and "The Portage Railroads & the Celilo Canal" (Aug. 30). Tanquist grew up "at the end of the line" in a small prairie town, and remembers watching trains at the switch- back with his mother, the day an engineer invited him to ride with him into the roundhouse.

Business group plans activities

By LLOYD DeKAY Have you wondered about the recent changes in White Salmon? Along Jewett Boulevard, the planter beds are cleaned up with new bark chips, salmon are swimming on fences where buildings once were, and also are swimming across the streets in crosswalks. The city has a new web site that's growing better each day. There's a new White Salmon banner on the gas line fence at the end of the bridge. And that's not all! Plans are in the works for a "free to all" concert in Rheingarten Park. We plan for this to become a regular summer "Saturday Evening in the Park" with a variety of performers and programs appealing to various ages, including movies and a Battle of the Garage Bands.
