Homesteading Fair coming to Lyle
On Sept. 29
September 18, 2012
The first Northwest Homesteading Fair is coming to Lyle on Saturday, Sept. 29, bringing together a diverse group of people who share an interest in homesteading.
"Homesteading is about living a self-sufficient life," said fair co-organizer Fern Johnson. "This may mean growing your own vegetables in an urban community garden, or living off-grid with a small farm and a variety of animals. It's being self-sufficient as you can right now, and striving to learn new skills and become more self-sufficient in the future."
She goes on to point out how important community is in homesteading. "This fair is also about building community and bringing people together. As a homesteader, you really appreciate all the help and knowledge your neighbors have to share. We all have different skills and tools that we bring to the community."
The fair will feature a variety of free community workshops -- from cheese making, canning and beekeeping to spinning and quilting and even solar power and energy efficient building. Organizers are even planning a blacksmithing demo where one can make a spoon.
Fair goers will also have a chance to shop for everything they need to get started with the new skills. Vendors will carry things like fun aprons, antiques, baby blankets, grain mills, beehives, old farm tools, sauerkraut crocks and jerky kits.
"We want the fair to be educational, but we also want it to be a fun family event," said Amanda Richards, fair co-organizer. "We have delicious local foods, activities for kids -- creating fairy gardens, panning for gold at the pioneer living museum, story time on the bookmobile, and farm animals to visit. I think it's going to be a really great event."
The best thing about the fair? it's free. Free parking, free admission, free workshops, free activities.
"We will be holding a great raffle at the fair to help raise the money we need to cover the fair costs," said Richards.
