Death notice for Harry Dechand

HARRY DECHANDHarry was born Sept. 21, 1932, at Camp 7 and remained a lifetime resident of Glenwood. He was a student in the Glenwood School District. He started working for wages at the age of 18, then joined the Marine Corps and fought in the Korean war and also achieved rank of sergeant.
After leaving the service, he worked for J. Neils and Champion International for 37 years. He drove a caterpillar tractor and operated other heavy equipment. Harry retired in 1986 and went into business for himself driving his cat, doing contracting work for Longview Fiber.
Harry married Lois Gribner in 1955 and to this marriage, four children were born. They lived their life in Glenwood raising their children, Linda Marlene, Yvette Marie, Lori Lyn and Tod Allen.
Harry fought two battles with cancer and won both for many years. He had faith in the Lord and also believed in Dr. Hamada.
In 1995 Harry was honored with Citizen of the Month for his many years of service to the Rodeo Association and many other organizations. He served many years on the Glenwood School Board, presenting each of his four children with their diplomas. He was an honorary Grange Member, 50-plus years; member of the Camas Prairie Pioneer Association and joined the Elks when he was 24.
Harry was very active in getting the Glenwood Fire Department started and supported them until he retired in 1999. The family station wagon was used for the ambulance until the department could purchase an aid car.
Harry also loved being involved with kids. He was a little league coach and ran the score clock for all the home basketball games for many years.
Harry's family was the highlight of his life. He loved going to his kids' and grandkids' sports and other school activities. He enjoyed being involved in all their accomplishments.
A special day for Harry was when he was able to celebrate his 80th birthday with many family, friends and relatives on Sept. 22, 2012.
Some of the things Harry loved to do were daily coffee with the gang at the Mountain Inn, a quick trip to the casino for some Black Jack and singing along with friends and family. He loved to sing!
He was not a stranger to anyone. He was known as "Uncle Harry."
Harry is survived by his wife Lois of Glenwood; children and their spouses Yvette and Ron, and Lori and Pete all of Klickitat; Tod and Teresa, and Darrell and Rhonda all of Glenwood; twin brothers Leroy and Leon of Medford; 10 grandkids and eight great grandkids. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary Alice and Henry Alec; brother Hank; sister Mary Ann and daughter Linda Marlene.
A funeral service for Harry, who passed away on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, surrounded by his family, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at Gardner Funeral Home with graveside services following at Mt. Adams Cemetery in Glenwood.
