WGAP recognizes community heroes

With annual awards

December 04, 2012

On Oct. 11, WGAP celebrated those doing good works in area communities with a "Recognition Evening."

The event was held at the Lyle Community Center and was attended by 85 individuals, volunteers and staff. Gadzukes! provided musical entertainment. Second Hand Rose presented a holiday themed Fashion Show.

The David Duncombe Living Your Conscience Award was presented to Margaret Walker.

The award was inspired by David Duncombe and his commitment to living his conscience every day. David was involved in 20 organizations, fasted three times in Washington DC in support of debt relief, and was jailed several times for various marches and sit ins. David Duncombe volunteered at various projects within WGAP since 1996. He was a member of the WGAP Board of Directors for 10 years.

Walker has been involved in numerous committees and organizations. She has volunteered countless hours to the community through her many memberships such as Friends of the Library, White Salmon Community Benefit, the Community Youth Concession Booth, and as a member of the local School Board. Everyone knows someone who she taught to play the piano, helped with reading or swam in her pool. Her life has been filled with her commitment to helping others.

A new award was presented that evening. WGAP Board of Directors recognizes that an individual who works for the improvement of the community is, in fact, benefitting all socioeconomic levels.

Werst was named Community Champion for 2012. Werst has worked on the Art & Wine Fusion, Concerts in the Park, the Pig Roast, the July 4th Parade and the Labor Day Car Show. He helps with Community Safe Halloween, the Dreaming of a White Salmon tree lighting, the Bingen Skate park's fundraiser and many, many other community projects. He was recognized not only for his amazing civic interest and energy, but for his continuing commitment to find new and innovative ways to get things done.
