Elks offering vocational scholarshipsApply by March 1January 29, 2013 The Washington State Elks Association Grant Program provides scholarships for eligible graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue an eligible vocational/technical course above and supplemental to high school. Requirements for the Vocational Program include: Applicant must be a U. S. citizen on the date of the application filing. Applicant must plan to attend a community college or vocational/technical training school. Applicant must be a graduating high school senior or general education receiving a diploma or certificate during the current year. The grant may only be used for tuition and fees or books and supplies at a Washington State community college or training school. It may only be used for the usual and required costs of the applicant's stated planned course of study and must be paid directly to the school. After the above criteria, applicants will be judged on scholarship, citizenship, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness, patriotism, general worthiness and financial need, along with skills showing aptitude toward a chosen vocation. The Mt. Adams Elks Lodge has two vocational scholarship awards available to 2013 graduating high school seniors: The William and Helen Bergstrom Scholarship - $1,000 The Ladies of the Elks Scholarship - $1,000 Additionally, the six best applications will be forwarded to the Washington State Elks Vocational Committee for judging in the state contest for additional scholarship awards. Any high school senior who is planning on attending a vocational school should consider applying for these awards. The Elks is committed to higher education both nationally and at a local level. The Mt. Adams Lodge gives four scholarship awards annually. The Bergstrom vocational scholarship was left in trust to the Mt. Adams Elks to help young people who could not afford or did not have the interest in going to a four-year college, but who wanted to learn a trade. The Ladies of the Elks goal is to help the community wherever they can. The LOE Scholarship award is just one more way of giving to the community and ensuring a higher education for those who need help. All applications properly executed, must be made on the official forms furnished by the Elks Association. All applications will be submitted for both scholarship awards. All applications must be in the hands of the local Mt. Adams Lodge no later than March 1. (124 NE Church Street, PO Box 647, White Salmon, Wash. 98672). For more information call 541-399-0575. |
