Masons support reading, give bikes to top readers

This year in Trout Lake, Glenwood and Klickitat

March 05, 2013

The ability to read is a hallmark of a productive and civil society. Because of this, Masonry has long supported youth scholarships.

The Masonic "Bikes for Books" program focuses on improving grade school students reading skills.

It is simple. A girls bike and boys bike (and helmets) are awarded to the girl and boy who best meet their schools criteria for reading accomplishment.

The schools determine how the bikes are awarded. Some schools raffle the bikes for students who have read a certain number of books. Other schools have selected their most improved readers.

In the last four years, White Salmon Lodge has awarded bicycles to top student readers in Carson, Dallesport, and White Salmon.

This year the lodge is working with grade schools in Trout Lake, Glenwood and Klickitat. The bikes are purchased and on display at the schools.

Who will the lucky readers be this spring?
