County establishes fireworks, burning restrictions in votes

Burn ban will be in effect July 1 through Sept. 30

The Klickitat County Board of Commissioners has voted to establish an emergency order restricting the discharge of common fireworks in Klickitat County.

The commissioners, voting on June 25, decided that there shall be no discharge of fireworks of any type in unincorporated areas of Klickitat County except for July 4 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The resolution also warns individuals that they can be held responsible for any fires their fireworks cause.

"In addition to any other legal consequences associated with the misuse of fireworks, the Department of Natural Resources and local fire districts may hold individuals or their legal guardians responsible for costs of cleaning up fires caused by their negligent use of fireworks," read a portion of the commissioners' resolution.

In addition to the fireworks restrictions, an outdoor burn ban was also approved.

Due to extreme fire hazards, the burn ban has been adopted throughout all unincorporated areas of Klickitat County, and will be in effect from July 1-Sept. 30.

The ban means no combustion of any type, whether open fire or burning in an open container, will be allowed.

"The Board finds that the public safety is threatened by unrestricted outdoor burning," read an excerpt from the resolution.
