Trout Lake scores in second overtime to earn district's top seed to state

Mustangs hope to slay St. George's Dragons in first round of 1A/B regional playoffs

Freshman Kris Huffsmith's goal three minutes into the second overtime last Friday gave Trout Lake a 4-3 victory over Day Star Christian in the Yakima Valley District 5 championship soccer match.

Trout Lake led 3-1 before Day Star rallied with two goals in the remaining 10 minutes of regulation to send the match into overtime.

The match was scoreless until sophomore Mike Hansen found the back of the Day Star net with four minute gone.

That lead stood until Day Star's Jacob Jones fired in the tying goal in the 42nd minute.

Hansen assisted on goals by seniors Dustin Poland (52nd minute) and Ben Anderson (70th minute) that put the Mustangs on top 3-1.

Huffsmith knocked in the game-winner off an assist from Poland.

The victory -- its third of the year over Day Star -- sends Trout Lake (13-3) to Spokane, to play St. George's this Friday in a loser-out match at Mead High School that starts at 1 p.m.

The winners of the Trout Lake-St. George's and Day Star-Northwest Christian matches will meet on Saturday, with a single berth in the state Class B Final Four on the line.

This year's state finals will be played at Auburn Stadium on Nov. 16-17.
