Death notices for Poppen, Largent and Portner


White Salmon resident Herbert William Poppen died on Oct. 18, 2001, at the age of 85.

Mr. Poppen was born in South Dakota to Herman and Rose (Fisher) Poppen on Sept. 22, 1916. On March 22, 1938, he married Myrtle F. Crowell and the couple lived in South Dakota until 1957 when they moved to Othello. In 1987, they settled in White Salmon. Mrs. Poppen died in 1990.

Mr. Poppen loved to play cards and work in his yard. He was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed fixing cars. The kids called him "Mr. Fixit." He was well-loved and a great friend.

Mr. Poppen is survived by his son, Wesley Poppen, White Salmon; grandchildren Troy Poppen, White Salmon, Caroline Clifton, Richland, Wesley Poppen Jr., White Salmon, and Jason Todd, White Salmon; step-granddaughter Jennifer, Kennewick; sisters Marie and Lilla, both of South Dakota; beloved friend Lois Rogers, White Salmon; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. Poppen will be held on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Gardner Chapel in White Salmon, with Pastor Bobby Beauchamp officiating.


Pamela Lou Largent, a Dallesport resident, died in Portland, Ore., on Oct. 20, 2001, at the age of 45.

Mrs. Largent was born in Portland, Ore., on Nov. 6, 1955, to Howard and Dorothy (Osborne) Williams. Her father's construction career moved the family a lot and as a young girl she lived in The Dalles, Troutdale and Gresham, Ore., and Longview and Kelso. In November 1983, he married Russell Largent in Kelso. The couple eventually made their home in Dallesport.

Mrs. Largent liked camping, hunting with her family, and traveling. She enjoyed gardens and participating in family activities, especially watching her husband in sports. She was a member of the Lyle Full Gospel Assembly.

Mrs. Largent is survived by her husband Russell, Dallesport; mother Dorothy Olson, Longview; sisters Teresa Ipoch and Mona Barker, Longview, Linda Brooks and Mary Risner, Kelso, and Bonnie Dyer, Olympia; and brothers Howard Williams and David Williams, Longview, and Joe Olson, Spokane. She was preceded in death by her father, brother Kenneth Olson, and stepfather Arnold Olson.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at 2 p.m., at Lyle Full Gospel Assembly, with Pastor Les Haarstad officiating. Interment was at Lyle Balch Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Lyle Full Gospel Assembly in care of Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon, who was in charge of arrangements.


Dale Allen Portner was born July 10, 1952, in Hood River, Ore., to Maxine (Mosher) and Lloyd "Buzz" Portner.

He was raised in White Salmon, graduating from Columbia High School in 1970. Mr. Portner spent his life working for SDS Lumber Company in the mill and several years on the woods crew. He worked for Longview Fibre and then for Bob Jolley Logging. For several years, he owned his own logging outfit with his sons.

Mr. Portner and his family moved to Idaho in 1999. He worked for Acra-Fab and recently worked at Harpers as a metal press operator.

He spent his life sharing his love of the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his sons and their many friends. He also enjoyed several years of softball and town team basketball.

Mr. Portner is survived by his wife Sheree; sons Jason and Brett, Post Falls, Idaho; granddaughters Jocelyn and Arianna, Post Falls, Idaho; brother Dennis Portner, White Salmon; sisters Cindy Yarnell, Husum, and Renee Holtmann, Trout Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Terry.

Memorials may be made to Columbia High School football summer camp.
