Christmas concert set for Dec. 15

Gorge Winds band to play Dec. 15 in The Dalles.

The Gorge Winds concert band will perform a Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 15, at The Dalles Civic Auditorium ballroom.

The band has 45 adult members.

The concert will feature an hour and a half of Christmas music, including an arrangement of "Silent Night" by Mannheim Steamroller, "White Christmas," and a rousing, foot-stomping "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen."

Director Sam Grotte of White Salmon said the volunteer musicians "play music for the sheer joy of it."

Gorge Winds is a "wind" band, meaning clarinets, flutes, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, baritone horns, tubas, and lots of percussion "toys."

The band was created about three years ago with 22 musicians. Now it has grown to more than 45 members. Musicians in the band live in nearly every community from Stevenson to Goldendale to Condon to the Tri-Cities, as well as The Dalles and Hood River.

The event in The Dalles is free and open to the public. The concert will begin at 7 p.m.
