Eugene L. Leighton, died in The Dalles, Ore., on Feb. 7, 2002, at the age of 72.
Mr. Leighton was born in Gravity, Iowa, to Lowell L. and Ruth O. (Dutton) Leighton on Jan. 5, 1930. He lived in Iowa and then Nebraska until 1937 when at the age of seven, the family moved to Washington State and settled in the Mill A area. Mr. Leighton attended elementary school in Mill A and high school in Stevenson. He graduated in the Class of 1949.
After high school, Mr. Leighton joined the Army and served active duty from 1951 to 1953. He was honorably discharged from the reserves in 1956. After active duty, he worked for several years at Bargy's Bakery in White Salmon. He then began to work for Broughton Lumber Company in Willard, and worked there until his retirement in 1986. He also completed a Radio and Television training in 1960, and spent many years repairing electronics in his free time.
Mr. Leighton was an active member of his community and was awarded numerous Certificates of Appreciation from the Mill A School. He also served on the school board for Skamania County.
His passion for sports made him a very devoted and active leader and coach in Little League. The baseball field in Mill A was dedicated to him. In addition to being an avid sportsman, he was also a very active member of the Presbyterian Church of over 35 years. He played piano for the congregation for most of those years.
Mr. Leighton lived in Mill A until December 2000 when he moved to the Oregon Veterans Home as a result of his illness.
Mr. Leighton is survived by brother Edwin Leighton, Cook; sisters Verda Bargabus, White Salmon, Doris Anderson, Mt. Vernon, and Patricia Jhanson, Ravensdale; and 14 nieces and nephews and 21 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece.
A memorial service for Mr. Leighton will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at 3 p.m. at the Evergreen Presbyterian Church in Mill A, with Stephen Riese officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Mill A School Athletic Fund or the Evergreen Presbyterian Church in care of Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon, which is in charge of arrangements.
Garadine "Gari" Elaine Estey of Underwood died on Jan. 20, 2002, in Coolridge, Ariz.
Mrs. Estey was born on Dec. 2, 1936, in Buhl, Idaho, to Russell and Katherine Lively.
Mrs. Estey is survived by her husband Dan; sons Rick, Carson, and Monte, Everett; daughter Vicki Onthank, Columbia Falls, Mont.; mother Katherine Lively, Buhl, Idaho; brothers Roy and Jerry Lively, San Diego, Calif., and Russell Lively, Twin Falls, Idaho; sister Nelda Atkinson, Antioch, Calif.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by son Daniel Estey and father Russell Lively.
There will be no memorial service at this time.
