Matson opts out of Congress bid

Republican candidate decides against running

Trent Matson, a Republican candidate for U.S. Congress in the Third District, has withdrawn from this year's race due to family considerations.

Matson, who ran against incumbent U.S. Rep. Brian Baird, a Democrat, in 2000, had been expected to provide a strong challenge to Baird, who is seeking a third term.

"We are already working hard to find a new candidate and hope to have an announcement soon," said Chris Vance, chair of the state Republican Party.
