Henkle Middle School's eighth-grade girls basketball team capitalized on its superior talent and aggressive nature for a 41-2 triumph Nov. 11 in season-opening action at Canyon Creek.
The Grizzlies scored 10 or more points in every quarter, but did most of their damage in the second and fourth quarters against their inexperienced Washougal opponents.
After a 10-point first quarter, the Grizzlies exploded for 17 points in the second quarter to take a 27-2 lead at halftime.
They added six in the third, then finished with an 18-point fourth quarter.
Grizzlies Coach Mike Yarnell took the lopsided victory with a grain of salt.
"This wasn't a good measuring stick," he said. "We'll wait and see what we can do against the Hockinsons and Woodlands in our league."
High-point honors went to Chelsea Ludwig and Chani Weiler; each scored eight points.
Bronda Middleton netted seven points, followed by Kelsey Kidd and Michelle Shrum with six apiece. Sierra Larsen added four, and Britta Knutson chipped in two.
On the boards, Knutson and Kidd led the way for for the Grizzlies. Defensive standouts included Ludwig, Larsen and Jenny Pulido.
Samantha Bakke, Sarai Salgado and Kara Woosley also saw playing time in Henkle's season opener.
