Participate in 'Light Up A Life' celebration

Annual event honors special someones on Dec. 3

The holidays are fast approaching and so is Hospice of The Gorge's Light Up A Life celebration.

The annual tradition returns the week following Thanksgiving and continues into early January 2003. It offers everyone the opportunity to honor or remember someone special at this meaningful time of the year.

Light Up a Life begins with an opening event Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Columbia Gorge Hotel on Westcliff Drive in Hood River. Everyone from all of the communities served by Hospice of The Gorge is invited at attend.

There is no admission charge.

The celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. in the hotel's ballroom with refreshments, a welcoming program and an opportunity for attendees to speak of someone important to them. Then, a procession will move onto the hotel's lovely grounds, decorated for the holidays with more than 500,000 tiny white lights.

In the midst of this magnificent holiday display, the Hospice tree -- the only one with colored lights -- will be lighted and attendees will be invited to hang an ornament in honor or in memory of someone special if they desire. Following the tree ceremony, the opening celebration will conclude in the ballroom.

Two additional Hospice trees will shine in other Gorge communities. In White Salmon, the tree honoring and memorializing special people will be at Bethel Congregational Church. St. Peter's Landmark is the location of the tree in The Dalles.

The Light Up a Life celebration will continue through the first weekend in January, 2003. As the celebration draws to a close, three name-reading ceremonies are planned.

Each name-reading ceremony will feature music, poetry, readings, refreshments and recognition of those remembered or honored by others.

The ceremonies begin in White Salmon at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, at Bethel Congregational Church, 480 E. Jewett Blvd. That same day at 2 p.m. a celebration will take place in The Dalles at St.Peter's Landmark at West Third and Lincoln streeets. The final Gorge name-reading ceremony takes place Sunday, Jan. 5, at Hood River Valley Christian Church, 975 Indian Creek Road, at 2 p.m.
