Last Thursday under the stadium lights, Henkle Middle School football teams handed La Center not one, but two solid defeats.
Henkle's seventh-graders, coming off a recent loss to Wind River, welcomed the Hawks to town with a 19-6 victory.
Standout running performances by Danny Chin and Kent Shelley, who combined for more than 150 yards rushing, sparked the Grizzlies' offense.
Devin Dean, Bow Ward, Erik Viramontes and Nik Salas led Henkle's defensive effort, which held La Center to a single touchdown.
Henkle's eighth-grade team continued the less-than-warm welcome and made sure La Center didn't go home without a 24-6 loss.
Thundering footwork by Jose Barajas and exceptional running by backs Ty Kruse, Stephen Lundh and Joey Stokes advanced the Grizzlies' score well into double digits by halftime.
Amazing defensive plays by Austin Krentz, Dom Yeager and Carl Panko helped the Grizzlies hold the Hawks to six points.
This week, Henkle's eighth-grade team (3-0-1) was scheduled to play Canyon Creek on Oct. 16 in Washougal.
Next Tuesday, both Henkle teams will play their final games at home against View Ridge (Ridgefield), with the seventh-graders kicking off the double-header at 4 p.m.
