Henkle Middle School's seventh- and eighth-grade football teams opened the 2002 season with convincing victories over their Wind River counterparts Sept. 18.
The seventh-graders kicked off the afternoon gridiron double-header at Stevenson High School, with Henkle coming out on the long end of a 24-13 score.
A solid performance by the entire Henkle team featured outstanding individual efforts by Darnell Douglas, Kent Shelley and Erik Viramontes.
Henkle's eighth-graders made it a Grizzlies sweep by thumping the Royals 32-0.
They did it with swarm tackling, domination of the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and great displays of athleticism.
Standouts for the Grizzlies included Tyler Kruse, Vince Cruse, Robby Kloster, Stephen Lundh and Dom Yeager.
Coaches for Henkle this year are Mitch Plummer, Jeff Lindstrom, Steve Kingsford-Smith and Taylor Gross.
The Grizzlies return to action on Thursday, Sept. 26, when they travel to Washougal High School to take on Jemtegaard. Kick off is slated for 5 p.m.
