Skamania PUD customers to get flier about health department

County launches own health agency

Customers of Skamania County PUD No. 1 will notice a little extra something in their utility bill. A buff-colored flier announcing the creation of the Skamania county Health Department will accompany invoices during the PUD two-month billing cycle that began Feb. 1.

The fliers, which the Board of Skamania County Commissioners asked the PUD to include in its utility bills, explain that Southwest Washington Health District is now Skamania County Health Department.

"We want the community to know that our local public-health office started the year with a new name but the same excellence in service and commitment will continue," said Marilyn Breckel, administrator of the newly formed health department. Breckel also serves as Skamania County's director of administrative services.

Skamania County and Clark County launched their own health departments Jan. 1, 2003, after Southwest Washington Health District, which had served the two counties, ended as an entity on Dec. 31, 2002.

Plans for the health district's reorganization began early last year, culminating in the two separate health departments.

For the next two years the Skamania County Health Department will provide services through a contract with Clark County. But officials may decide to extend or renew the agreement.

The health department, which provides immunizations, water-testing, septic permits and other services, is at 683 SW Rock Creek Drive in Stevenson. Residents and businesses can call the department at (509) 427-5138 or (800) 996-2526.
