Newhouse gets leadership role

Junior representative named Assistant Whip

House Republican leaders today announced that newly elected Rep. Dan Newhouse has been appointed to a leadership position as Assistant Whip.

Newhouse, R-Sunnyside, will begin his job as assistant whip when he is sworn in Jan. 13, the opening day of the 2003 legislative session.

"I am honored to be appointed to this position," said Newhouse. "I look forward to working with the new House Republican leadership, as well as with my colleagues on the other side of the aisle."

As a member of the whip team, Newhouse will take part in coordinating the daily floor action of Republicans in the House, including initiating and responding to parliamentary actions. He also will help develop responses to Democratic Party proposals, anticipate action on the House floor, and meet regularly with other Republican leaders and chairs of legislative committees to discuss policy decisions and help organize floor debates.

In addition to his position as assistant whip, Newhouse will also serve on the Capital Budget Committee, Financial Institutions & Insurance Committee, and the Judiciary Committee. He said his committee assignments go hand-in-hand with his commitment to rebuilding the trust of Washington citizens and improving Washington's economic climate.

"Creating jobs for Washington citizens and regaining their trust in state government will be my primary focus in Olympia," said Newhouse. "I believe my committee assignments will position me well in these critical issues."
