A 1992 Acura driven by Kirby P. Kirkpatrick, 18, Washougal, was westbound on State Route 14 near milepost 22. The vehicle collided head-on with an eastbound 2000 Hyundai Elantra driven by Mathew D. Krout, 38, Washougal.
Kirkpatrick, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was not injured.
Krout was transported with injuries to Emmanuel Hospital in Portland. A passenger in his vehicle, Wendy L. Krout, 32, was transported to Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver. Both Krouts were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
On Saturday, July 19, 2003, at approximately 6:43 p.m., the Skamania County Sheriff's Office received a report of an overdue hiker on the Truman Trail by Johnson Ridge Observatory.
Deputies from Cowlitz and Skamania County, along with volunteer searchers from Cowlitz, Clark, Lewis and Skamania County responded.
The missing hiker identified as Mary Wong from Seattle, was with a church hiking party of 24 persons. Wong was in the middle of the group but failed to show up at the trailhead. Searchers continued the search throughout the night.
At daylight, Wong was located at St. Helens Lake by search members of Cowlitz County. A MAST helicopter from Ft. Lewis lifted Wong from the area and transported her to an awaiting ambulance.
Wong suffered from mild hypothermia and dehydration. She was treated on scene and released.
