Lyle snares first state softball berth

Cougars beat Klickitat Vandals with run in bottom of the eighth of district title game

Mitzi McMurrin scored from second base on Sarah Billette's basehit in the bottom of the eighth inning last Saturday to give Lyle a 4-3 victory over Klickitat in the Yakima Valley District B softball tournament title game at Zillah.

The championship, Lyle's first in fastpitch softball, sends the Cougars (14-5) to the state tournament in Wenatchee on May 30-31.

McMurrin drew a lead-off walk off Klickitat pitcher Jaecee Ramsay in the bottom of the eighth and moved to second when Ramsay walked Tonya Schroeder.

On a 3-1 count, Billette hit the ball up the middle to bring McMurrin home with the winning run.

Schroeder got the win for Lyle, scattering four hits over seven innings. Ramsay allowed eight hits.

McMurrin and Billette both went 2 for 3 with a run batted in. Tara Rappe was 2 for 4, and Schroeder drove in two runs in the second inning with a double.

The Vandals scored single runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings off Schroeder.

Lyle plated three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.

Sunnyside Christian 7, Klickitat 3 --

The Knights kept their state tournament bid alive by scoring all seven of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Vandals, co-champions of the Greater Columbia B League, nursed a 3-0 lead until the fateful sixth.

Four of Sunnyside Christian's runs came home on a pair of extra-base hits -- a two-run double and a two-run triple -- off losing pitcher Jaecee Ramsay.

Each team collected seven hits in the seven-inning contest. Three of SC's hits went for extra bases.

Defensively, Klickitat made two errors while SC played an error-free game.

SC plays again this Saturday against the second-place team from the North Central District. The winner goes on to state.
