Annual clean-up whirlwind coming to town

Community Pride kicks orff April

The ninth annual community cleanup event -- known as Community Pride Week -- kicks off in Bingen and White Salmon beginning April 26.

The focal point of the event is the April 30-May weekend. That's when the drop-off site next to the Bingen Public Works Department building and the recycling/brush chipping site (Lakeview Road) is abuzz with activity. Beginning at noon on April 30, an army of volunteers will be at the new site (across the road from last year's site).

The following items will be accepted at no charge:

reusable household items (clothing, furniture, etc.);

scrap metal (aluminum die cast, radiators, stainless steel, tin, copper, brass, and lead, but no vehicles);

recyclable paper, metal, plastic, glass;

building materials (windows, doors, cabinets, lumber, sinks, tubs, bricks and blocks, tile, lighting, electrical and plumbing; but no broken items accepted);

used appliances (washers, dryers, stoves, microwaves, heaters, hot water tanks, air conditioners, but no toasters or similar small appliances)

brush and tree limbs up to five inches in diameter, but no grass clippings, pine needles, leaves, bark, scrap lumber, root balls or tree stumps.

used tires from passenger cars, light trucks, and semi trucks, but no larger tires or any tires on a rim. The tires can be dropped of for $3 per tire ($10 for semi truck).

No household wastes such as paint, pesticides, or cleansers can be accepted.

The drop-off site will be staffed at the following times:

Friday, April 30: Noon to 4 p.m.;

Saturday, May 1: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.;

Sunday, May 2: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

New this year is a community-wide yard sale network. On May 1, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., the cities of Bingen and White Salmon are coordinating a system that will feature at least 20 individual yard sales on that day. Maps will be prepared to show sale-goers where all the yard sales will be. The maps will be distributed at The Creamery in downtown White Salmon, at the new Bingen Station Coffee Haus in downtown Bingen, and at Antiques & Oddities in Hood River. To be included on the list, contact White Salmon City Hall, 493-1133.

For more information, to volunteer, or to arrange for assistance with hauling your materials, contact the Mt. Adams Chamber of Commerce at 493-3630.

The annual cleanup event is organized by the Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the White Salmon and Bingen Rotary Club.
