Death notices for Winifred Schuman and Florence Neilsen


Winifred Elizabeth Balsiger Schuman, 77, nationally renowned astrologer, of Coconut Creek, Fla., died from complications of a heart attack on Aug. 9, 2004.

Born in White Salmon, to Marian and Maurice Balisiger, she graduated from Columbia high school. She worked for many years in Portland, Ore., as a realtor and moved to Florida in 1984 where she pursued her lifelong passion in astrology.

She is survived by her four children: Phillip A. Schuman, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Lynn Schuman Allen, Coral Springs, William Schuman, New York City, N.Y., and Christopher Schuman, New York City, N.Y.; her four grandchildren and her former husband, Phillip R. Schuman.

At her request, no services will be held.

Memorials may be made to the Science of Mind Foundation,, or the S. Florida Astrological Association,


Florence Neilsen, a former resident of Trout Lake and White Salmon, passed away Aug. 4, 2004, at the age of 84, in California, where she had made her home for the last 10 years, to be near her daughters.

Florence was born to Matt and Ida Sampson May 5, 1920, at Laurel.

Mrs. Neilsen is survived by her two daughters Linda Forni and Alice Mahan, five granddaughters, three great-granddaughters, one great-grandson, three nieces, one nephew and sister-in-law, Dorothy Sampson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Matt and Ida Sampson, brother Ernest Sampson and an infant sister.

Mrs. Neilsen's remains will be returned to White Salmon for burial.
