Local swimmers stand out at district

Hood River Valley Swim Team takes second at final meet of summer season

Hood River Valley Swim Team concluded its 2005 summer season last weekend with a second-place finish at the Eastern Oregon District Swim Championships in The Dalles.

Justine Rawding of Husum, Erin Jones of White Salmon, Matthew Bergstrom of White Salmon, and Mariah Rawding of Husum led HRVST's strong showing at the multi-team meet, which was won by host The Dalles Swim Team.

Rawding, competing in her final youth meet, won eight of nine swims (between preliminaries and finals) overall in the girls 15-18 division en route to five district championships. The 18-year-old, a 2005 graduate of Columbia High School, will swim competitively for New York's Niagara University.

Jones, 14, also won five district titles (two in personal-record times) and didn't lose a race during the season-ending, Aug. 12-14 competition in Ted Walker Pool.

Bergstrom, 10, paced the HRVST boys squad with three victories and two second-place finishes in five finals swims.

Rawding, 10, the younger sister of Justine, also placed first in three finals swims. In her two other finals, she scored second- and third-place points for her team.

Jesse Robertson, 11, Trout Lake, also had a strong meet for HRVST, coming in second twice and third twice while posting four personal records and five top-six finishes.

On the boys side, Jacob Rawding, 10, Husum, and Adam Wooster, 13, White Salmon, were among the team's most-improved swimmers during the meet. Each clocked four personal records on his way to four top-10 finals finishes.
