Jazz festival expands into the Gorge

Events planned for Hood River Hotel, sternwheeler

The Mt. Hood Jazz Festival is expanding its reach beyond East Multnomah County and venturing up the Columbia River with performances on the Sternwheeler Columbia Gorge and the Hood River Hotel.

While the bulk of the 24th Annual Mt. Hood Jazz Festival takes place in historic downtown Gresham, Aug. 5-7, two additional feature concerts have been added.

On Sunday, Aug. 7, "A Day of Jazz in Scenic Settings," there will be a Jazz Brunch Cruise aboard the Sternwheeler Columbia Gorge, based in Cascade Locks. The Jake Kot Band featuring Paul Mazzio, George Mitchell & Reinhardt Melz will perform on the leisurely cruise up the Columbia River. The cruise runs noon-2:00 p.m.

The second musical event is a concert at the historic Hood River Hotel in downtown Hood River on Thursday, Aug. 11. The concert features longtime Portland jazz trio Tall Jazz featuring versatile vocalist Mary Kadderly.

It runs 6-8 p.m. at the Hood River Hotel, 102 Oak Ave., Hood River.

The two concerts not only extend the musical offerings by the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, but also give travelers a reason to explore the beauty of Oregon and the Columbia River Gorge. It is part of an effort by the festival to expand its cultural tourism draw.

In addition to the concerts, the festival's newly designed website,, has added an Area Attractions page to help promote tourism to the Columbia Gorge, East Multnomah County, and Hood River areas. More concerts in the area are planned for the future.

The Mt. Hood Jazz Festival runs Friday-Saturday, Aug. 5-6, in Gresham. The Festival Main Stage features the finest Northwest jazz talent for FREE. The music will also be flowing out of the doorways with select restaurants and clubs hosting other musical acts.

The music continues a second weekend with the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival Encore! Aug. 14, at The Bite of Oregon, featuring three nationally known jazz acts, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, and pianist Eric Reed.
