Husum-area burn ban takes effect April 1

FPD No. 3 commissioners cite bad water situation, dry conditions

After taking stock of the number of fire calls since the first of the year, the commissioners of Klickitat Fire District No. 3, based in Husum, are calling for a burn ban to be in place by April 1.

If there is an increase in the amount of rain between now and April 1, the proposed early burn ban will be reconsidered.

"There has been a high call volume for brush piles, burn barrels, and small yard cleanup projects that have gotten out of control and can cause major damage," explained Mollie Krall, fire district secretary. "The community needs to be aware of the potential fire danger that we are looking at in the upcoming months. The water situation is very bad and the woods are much too dry for the season."

Krall advised that residents inspect the areas around their houses and outbuildings to see if there is a buildup of brush and vegetation that needs to be cleared out to help protect property in the district.

"If you store large amounts of fuel on your property, let the fire departments know where they are located. If you have any pertinent information regarding your property that you feel the fire department should know, please call the Husum station and leave a message and we will call you back," Krall said. "The district would like to see a safe and enjoyable year for everyone."

The telephone number for Fire District No. 3 is 493-2996.
