Report for Skamania County Sheriff's Office

The Skamania County Sheriff's Office, along with members of Wind River Search and Rescue, Skamania Fire District 1, and Skamania County EMS were involved with a rescue operation to remove 38-year-old Jeff Blakley of Carson from the steep canyon area surrounding Shepard Falls on the Wind River near Carson.

Blakley suffered head injuries and a compound fracture of the leg sustained from falling an unknown distance to the rocky shore of the Wind River on May 17, 2005, at approximately 5 p.m.

A family member told Skamania County deputies he was going fishing when the accident occurred.

Blakley was transported to Legacy Emmanuel Hospital in Portland by one of the Blackhawk helicopters from the 1042nd Air National Guard unit out of Salem.

The four-man crew of the helicopter consisted of the pilot, copilot, crew chief and flight medic.

The medic was dropped on the hoist down to the victim, where he stabilized the injuries, loaded him onto the litter, and then was hoisted into the helicopter.
