Fabric artist shows quilts at library

Work on display through December

"Painting in Fabric: Fiber Art and Art Quilts" by Joan Schueman Ahlers, will be on display at the White Salmon Valley Community Library during the month of December.

As a fiber artist, Ahlers combines her love of quilting and design with her love of painting to transform the fabric of quilts into works of art. Her art quilts are "Paintings in Fabric" that incorporate painterly techniques with the art of quilting. Nature inspires her vibrant landscapes, garden scenes, and florals. She is intrigued by color and endeavors to express color relationships, symbolism, dimension and distance. Using hand-dyed and uniquely imprinted fabrics and fibers, Ahlers embellishes her creations with paint, iridescent threads and ribbon, as well as metallic and sequin trims.

Her series of art quilts depicting ancient Native American war and dance shields resulted from an interest that developed while living in the Southwest. She enjoys rendering family crests in fabric designs and creates one-of-a-kind nursery quilts featuring original and artistically rendered characters from fairy tales and children's fables.

Ahler's fiber art has been shown locally in the Artists of the Gorge Exhibition, Dolce Skamania Lodge Holiday Quilt Show, North Bonneville Lodge, Trout Lake Festival of the Arts, Blossom Fest Quilt Show, and various area art galleries. Her work has been in numerous other juried shows in New Mexico.

The exhibit will be on display from December 2-29 during regular library hours.
