On Monday, April 24, Mill A Elementary, a tiny K-8 rural school in eastern Skamania County, is sponsoring a school wide walk to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association.
The entire population of 77 students is likely to participate in this unique fundraiser. Organized by teacher Debi Fielding, the event will also provide information for students and their families on the causes and prevention of diabetes.
Fielding, one-half of the first and second grade teaching team, is also Mill A School's physical education instructor. Fielding recognized this opportunity as a great way to impress upon students the importance of exercise in a healthy lifestyle. Encouraging students to get moving is a challenge many schools and parents are facing, and she hopes this will show children and their families the benefits easily gained just by walking.
Funds raised through this event will go towards supporting diabetes research, advocacy and education. Walk events also help raise knowledge about the ways in which exercise and a healthy diet contribute to the prevention of diabetes and other life-threatening diseases.
