White Salmon's Joey Lewis makes his state tournament debut this Friday in the Tacoma Dome Arena, in a 189-pound match against Dustin Baldwin of Nine Mile Falls.
Lewis, a Columbia High junior, qualified for the 2A tournament last Saturday during the SW Washington district meet in Hoquiam.
He is the first White Salmon wrestler to compete at state since Kenny Mace in 2003.
Jessica Strain of White Salmon will compete on the vault and the balance beam this weekend at the Class 3A/2A state meet in the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
A senior at Columbia High, Strain was part a Stevenson team effort that produced a sixth-place finish (out of 18 teams) during the district meet at Federal Way. Stevenson finished with 142.825 points.
Strain was the last competitor on the beam and turned in a sixth-place performance of 8.375. Her score on the vault was 10th best (8.35).
This will be Strain's second trip to the state meet. She also went to state in 2004.
Prep Boys Basketball:
Jereth Robinson scored 28 points last Friday to lead Stevenson past La Center, 78-64, in a key Trico Division contest for the Bulldogs.
The win, coupled with Ridgefield's overtime loss to Castle Rock, kept Stevenson in a three-way battle for second place in division standings.
Stevenson (11-7) entered the final week of the regular season with a 6-4 Trico record, tied with Castle Rock for third place and one-half game back of Ridgefield.
The Bulldogs need one win this week to lock up a district tournament berth. They hosted Columbia High on Tuesday, then visit Woodland on Friday.
Scott Bergstrom of White Salmon recorded an age group Sectional time Sunday in the 100-yard butterfly at the Canby (Ore.) Valentine's Invitational.
Bergstrom, 11, posted a personal-record, sixth-place time of 1:17.77 in the event.
