Back-to-back wins vault Cougars into division lead

Lyle scored the first seven points and led by as many as 28 on the way to a 62-37 Greater Columbia B League victory over Trout Lake-Glenwood last Saturday in Trout Lake.

Joey Nelson had 24 points, Martin Grace added 17 and Reggie Grace chipped in 13 for Lyle, which won its second in a row to improve to 2-1 in league and 3-6 overall.

Trout Lake-Glenwood (TLG), which trailed the whole way and lost its third straight to fall to 3-5 overall, was paced by Tim Dearden's 13 points.

The host Eagles got a tie-breaking basket with 28 seconds to play last Friday, then added a free throw with four seconds left for their first league win.

The Vandals (0-2, 4-5) led, 43-36, after three quarters but couldn't put the Eagles away.

J.J. Keys scored a game-high 29 points for Klickitat, which lost its second straight.

The Cougars broke last Friday's league game open in the fourth quarter, stretching a seven-point lead after three quarters to 23 by game's end.

Joey Nelson tossed in game-best 22 points and Justin Griffin grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Lyle, which snapped a six-game losing streak with its best offensive production of the season.

The Vandals had three players score in double figures but the Hawks notched the Jan. 3 non-league win with a second-half comeback.

The visitors from Hood River overcame deficits of 34-28 at halftime and 40-39 entering the fourth quarter to send the Vandals to their fourth loss in eight starts.

Klickitat senior J.J. Keys led all scorers with 22 points, and teammates Richard McConville and Hershel Sanchey added 12 and 11 respectively.

The Bulldogs couldn't capitalize on an 18-13 first-quarter lead in their Jan. 3 Trico Division opener.

Instead, the Rockets, sparked by Aaron Gehring, took control of the game with a 22-5 second-quarter run.

Gehring, one of three Rockets in double figures, finished with a game-high 22 points as Castle Rock improved to 4-5 overall.

Jereth Robinson and Nathan Daman paced Stevenson (4-4) with 13 and 12 points respectively.
