Fish barrier removal project begins

SR 142 closed beginning July 21

A project that will improve habitat and movement for native fish through the Bowman Creek culvert and the Snyder Canyon Creek culvert under State Route 142 in Klickitat County began July 10.

This contract, funded through the WSDOT Ecological Retrofit Program, was awarded to Wilder Construction Company of Portland, Ore. who submitted the winning bid of $1,495,495.

The project will take place at Snyder Creek (mileposts 13.28 to 13.43) and at Bowman Creek (mileposts 20.15 to 20.25) along SR 142.

The existing culvert at Bowman Creek will be replaced with a new bridge and the channel will be rebuilt with streambed materials to simulate natural conditions.

Another section of the project at Snyder Creek will rebuild the end of an existing box culvert and restore the streambed.

In their current condition, these culverts act as fish barriers, preventing fish from moving upstream. This project will help to provide access to good quality habitat, which is a key component to the recovery of listed salmonids.

SR 142 will be closed at the Bowman Creek culvert (mileposts 20.15 to 20.25) for approximately six weeks beginning July 21. The alternate route during the Bowman Creek closure will be SR 14 to SR 97.

After the initial six week complete closure at Bowman Creek, additional single lane closures will occur for approximately one month. Motorists should expect 20-minute delays and narrow roadway widths when single lane closures take place.

Snyder Canyon Creek culvert (mileposts 13.28 to 13.43) traffic impacts will be minimal. There will be occasional single lane closures in the project area.

During the complete closure of SR 142, crews will be working 7 days a week, so the highway can be reopened as soon as possible. Construction is expected to last 60 working days, and is expected to be complete in September.

Additional traffic impacts will be made available as they are scheduled.

Advance warning signs will be placed ahead of the construction area, and motorists are asked to observe and adhere to the posted speed limits when driving through the work zone.

Motorists are also reminded that all traffic fines are doubled within a construction work zone when workers are present (RCW 46.61.527).
