Report for Klickitat County Sheriff and Washington State Patrol

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, the Klickitat County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a residence on Canyon Road in Appleton. The call reported a domestic altercation between family members at the residence. Deputies were dispatched to the scene as multiple calls were placed between the dispatch center and the residence.

Upon arriving at the residence, deputies found no one at the residence. Having seen a vehicle leaving from the area, as they were arriving, deputies contacted additional law enforcement officers to watch for the vehicle. An officer from the Bingen-White Salmon Police Department observed the described vehicle as it was headed west on State Route 14 towards Bingen.

As the vehicle entered Bingen it was stopped by city and county law enforcement. When the vehicle stopped the driver immediately exited and told officers that the passenger was armed. The passenger, Steven Gerner of Appleton, was taken into custody after a brief standoff with the officers.

From the subsequent investigation it was determined that Gerner allegedly had a physical altercation with his uncle earlier in the evening. Gerner then was believed to have brandished a knife at his uncle and threatened to kill him if he did not go to the bank and withdraw money so he could leave. Gerner then allegedly held a knife to his uncle's throat as they drove from the residence in Appleton to Bingen.

Gerner was booked into the Klickitat County Jail on the charges of kidnapping first degree, robbery first degree, and assault first degree. All charges were domestic violence related.
