Endurance riders compete on trails

Glenwood News for June 15

By the

The Klickitat Trek Endurance Ride drew over 170 entrants from five western states and two Canadian provinces for the annual equestrian event held June 3. The 80-mile ride drew 12 entries and allowed 19 hours for completion of the course. There were 75 entries in the 50-mile ride with a 12-hour limit; 60 competitors in the 30-mile trek; and 30 novice riders in the 12-mile course. Starting times were staggered for the various lengths of rides, beginning at 5:30 a.m. Including support staff, the small city that sprang up at the Glenwood Rodeo Grounds had a population of about 350 people over the weekend. According to Len Rolph, the conditions were perfect for the ride this year with cool weather and no dust. One rider suffered a broken leg and there were a few other minor human and equine injuries during the weekend, but all in all, the group enjoyed its time in Glenwood, and looks forward to returning next year.

Get well wishes are extended to Dale Smith for a speedy recovery after his knee surgery.

The traditional Father's Day weekend in Glenwood involves most of the community members in one capacity or another helping with the rodeo or rodeo-associated activities. The 4-Hers are gearing up for their pop stand. Meanwhile the Homemakers are making their list and checking it twice in preparation for the Cowboy Breakfast on Sunday morning at the school. The Glenwood Rodeo Association members are going over their last-minute job assignments. Other community members are preparing to compete in the rodeo, make an entry in the parade, or to support the rodeo by purchasing an admission ticket. Whatever the level of involvement, most community members look forward to "the big rodeo" over Father's Day weekend.

The Mt. Adams 4-H Club members are selling raffle tickets for two summer-themed baskets. Tickets are $1 each and are available from 4-H members as well as at the 4-H pop stand during the rodeo. One basket will be raffled Saturday and one on Sunday during the Ketch 'Um Kalf Rodeo performances. The baskets contain garden related items as well as a small BBQ. Be sure to support the Mt. Adams 4-Hers by purchasing a chance to win the baskets.

P.S. Happy Father's Day to all of you dads! We love you and appreciate all you do for us!
