"Summer Reading" for kids birth to age 11 is well under way at the White Salmon Valley Community Library. The theme this year is Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales.
Kids who haven't signed up yet, can come on in, pick up a "Summer Fun Journal" packet and start reading! Kids can sign up any time before Aug. 15 and you can keep reading and collecting prizes through Sept. 15 (while prizes last).
In addition to earning exciting prizes for every five hours of reading, don't forget to attend the Thursday (and one Friday) evening events, starting June 29 and continuing through Aug. 3 for some great special programs for the whole family.
All but one of the programs are on Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. at the library with one program on Friday, July 28, at the Bingen City Park at 2:30 p.m.
Here's the line-up:
June 29, T-shirt Silk Screening (bring your own light-colored T-shirt, or cloth bag and library aides will help silkscreen the Summer Reading logo to wear all summer long and beyond. In addition members of our Young Adult Advisory Board (YAAB) will present a hilarious play based on the familiar rhyme, Bill Grogan's Goat.
July 6, Greta's Wild and Wacky Songfest. Greta Pederson will inspire even the wildest creatures in the audience to join the pack and hoot with delight.
July 13, Mad Science. You won't believe your eyes in this interactive science discovery program, the "Mad Scientist" will guide attendees through a series of high-energy, activity-oriented experiments.
July 20, The Pirate and His Pet with Jason Ropp Dragon Puppets Theatre will bring this story to life with a combination of humor and amazing puppets. It is a fairy tale with a twist!
Friday, July 28, at Bingen City Park, Border Collies International. Meet Ritsa, Rock, Mr. Black and Forest. These dogs are rescued border collies trained to do amazing sport tricks. Come watch their fantastic feats and learn some tricks to teach your own dog.
Aug. 3, Big World Beat and Music Tour and Summer Reading Grand Finale Celebration. This energetic live musical show takes kids on a musical, multicultural trip around the world on the "Rhythm Bus" where they will explore music from North and South America, Africa and the Caribbean. And stay for the great cookies and punch provided by the Friends of the Library.
