Fall chinook return mark hatchery open house

Open house set for Sept. 16

The adult tule fall Chinook salmon are returning to the Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery in Underwood. Come in to the hatchery to view adults leaping up the fish ladder and take a closer look at them in the adult holding ponds.

Spawning begins Sept. 15 and will continue through Sept. 29. Best times to view are in the morning, as the process often wraps up by 2 p.m. daily.

Join the hatchery's Open House on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors can watch the fish coming up the fish ladder, learn more about why and how fish are raised in hatcheries, watch a new generation of salmon being spawned, take a look at the Fish Marking Trailer, play a round of Migration Golf and talk with representatives from other agencies at their informational booths.

Hatchery employees will also offer fish printing again this year (bring your own T-shirt and take home wearable art!!), as well as other educational activities.

Light refreshments will be available.
