County seeks alterations in shoreline plan to allow Roosevelt solid waste handling

Before the Klickitat County Planning Department

The Klickitat County Planning Department has drafted a proposed change in Klickitat County's Shoreline Master Plan relating to solid waste handling at the Roosevelt intermodal facility adjacent to the landfill site.

In a Sept. 14 memorandum, the Planning Department wrote: "Although the facility is used for solid waste handling, this use may have been inadvertently prohibited under the county Shoreline Master Plan ... The facility is used for loading grain onto barges for national and international transport, and for importing solid waste. Solid waste from several states, and from outside the U.S., is transferred from rail cars to trucks for transport to the Roosevelt Regional Landfill. To date, the facility has not been used for receipt of barged solid waste, although the use is planned for the county's Solid Waste management Plan."

A public hearing on this issue is scheduled before the Klickitat County Planning Commission for 7 p.m., Oct. 16. Also, the Planning Department is requesting comment on the proposal from any interested parties.

Comments can be sent to: Klickitat County Planning Department, 228 W. Main Street, MS-17, Goldendale, Wash., 98620. Comments should be received no later than Oct. 2 to be included in the staff report, although comments may be submitted up until the public hearing.

After the hearing, the Planning Commission will make a recommendation on the matter to the Klickitat County Board of Commissioners for approval or further hearings.

For more information on this proposal, contact the Planning Department, 1-800-765-7239 (toll-free) or (509) 773-5703.
