It may have been Friday the 13th, but Columbia High wasn't buying into superstition when it faced Ilwaco here in the first SWW 1A League Trico Division double-header for both teams.
The Bruins withstood a late Fishermen rally and hung on for an 8-7 victory in game one, then put together two big innings in game two en route to a 15-8 win.
First baseman Kristie Morris sparked the CHS offense in the opener, going 3 for 3 with a pair of RBI singles. Shortstop Ericka Ziegler scored a team-best three runs.
In the seventh, the two combined--shortstop to first--to record the game's final out and make a winner of pitcher Ilima Caldwell.
Caldwell scattered nine hits walked three and struck out three in seven innings for her second complete-game victory. (Her first came in CHS's season-opening 15-6 win at Goldendale.)
In the nightcap, which was called because of darkness at the end of six innings, the Bruins backed Andrea Helton's 10-hit, no-walk effort by scoring six runs in the top of the first and nine in the top of the fourth.
Lacey Delehant paced CHS's eight-hit offense, collecting three hits in four at-bats and driving in three runs. Ziegler also had three hits, to go with a run batted in, three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Columbia's six-run first featured RBI base hits by Delehant and Morris, and a run-producing sacrifice by Lacey Kruse.
In the fourth, the Bruins batted around and took full advantage of their five hits, five walks and an error to score nine runs.
Delehant slugged two RBI singles in the frame, while Claire Stevenson and Ziegler both singled in runs.
The Bruins (2-0, 4-3) host a Trico Division double-header against the Stevenson Bulldogs here Friday afternoon. Game one starts at 4 p.m.
