Youth Football:

The first day of practice for Gorge Youth Football League teams is Monday, Aug. 6. A season-opening jamboree will take place Aug. 18, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Wahtonka field, in The Dalles, Ore.

This season, the YFL has 12 teams with the addition of teams in Lyle/Dallesport and Dufur, Ore., and a second Goldendale squad, and has been split into two six-team divisions.

White Salmon Black will play in the A Division with Goldendale, Hood River Blue, Stevenson, The Dalles Red and Dufur.

White Salmon Red has been assigned to the B Division, along with Goldendale PAL, Hood River Green, Lyle/Dallesport, The Dalles Black and The Dalles White.

Season-opening crossover games will be played Saturday, Aug. 25. In Goldendale, White Salmon Red will oppose Goldendale in the 10 a.m. game; at 11:30, White Salmon Black will take on Goldendale PAL.

Prep Sports:

Wednesday, Aug. 15, is the first day high school football teams can practice for the 2007 season. Moreover, players must log 12 practices before they can play in a game.

Columbia High opens 2007 at home on Friday, Aug. 31, against Goldendale. Lyle kicks off its season the same night at the Dufur, Ore., Eight-man Classic.

The first day high school volleyball and girls soccer teams can practice is Monday, Aug. 20. Players of these sports need 10 workouts before they can participate in a match.

CHS's girls soccer team plays its 2007 season-opener at home versus Kalama on Tuesday, Sept. 11. The CHS volleyball team opens the season on the road at Ilwaco on Thursday, Sept. 13.

Trapshooting:

The Mid-Columbia Trap Club will hold its annual Gorge Cactus Classic Shoot on Saturday, Aug. 11, on the Trap Club's shooting grounds off Dallesport Road, in Dallesport.

Four events are scheduled--50 single targets, 50 handicap targets, Follow the Leader Shoot, and the 60-Bird Phil Athanas Appreciation Backer for teams--with the first event set to begin at 9 a.m.

Hiking:

The Pacific Crest Trail Association will celebrate Pacific Crest Trail Day and the opening of its new regional office in Cascade Locks, Ore., on Saturday, Aug. 11.

The event will be held at the PCT Trailhead, at the entrance to the Bridge of the Gods toll bridge park, starting at 10 a.m.

Hikers will be able to take part in a 1.8-mile or 6-mile hike and learn how they can support the trail and perform light trail maintenance.

Free camping will be provided to all PCT hikers at Cascade Locks' Marine Park and free shuttle service will run between the park and the trailhead.

Western Games:

In conjunction with White Salmon's centennial celebration, the West Klickitat Posse Saddle Club will hold a Play Day on Saturday, Aug. 11, at the club's Posse Grounds, at 50 Snowden Rd.

Skateboarding:

Doug's Sports of Hood River is organizing its third annual skateboard contest as a fundraiser for the Hood River Skate Park. This year's "Spam Jam" will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, beginning at noon, at the skate park.

Skaters can pre-register at Doug's Underground, 101 Oak St., for the price of $12 or wait to sign up until 10 a.m. on Aug. 18 and pay $15. All registrants will receive a T-shirt and goody bag on the day of the event.

Contests will be held in four age divisions: 10 and under, 11-14, 15-17, and 18 and over. Prizes will be awarded in each division, including prizes for best overall run and best trick.

Each rider will receive two rides at two minutes each. Helmets are required in all age groups. For more information, also stop by Doug's.
