Six Columbia High wrestlers posted winning records last Friday at the season-opening Eagle Indian Invitational Meet in The Dalles.
Freshman Kristien Contreras went 2-0 on the day with two pins, junior Jon Belvin, freshman Zac Halpern and freshman Connor Warner were all 2-1 with two pins, and sophomore Ethan Cranmer and junior Kevin Kreps were both 2-1 with a pin.
Their performances left first-year Bruins Coach Rich Polkinghorn feeling good about Columbia's potential.
"I am real proud of the way all the kids from CHS competed and am excited about the upcoming season," he noted. "Overall, we're a very young and inexperienced team...we're looking for improvement every time we step on the mats."
The next challenge for Columbia High wrestlers will come this Saturday in La Center, during the 16th annual Wildcat Invitational Meet.
Said Polkinghorn: "We have a tremendous amount of room for improvement and if the boys keep working hard, we will be a completely different team at the end of the season."
