Bruins qualify five for regional meet

Ten Columbia High wrestlers--five qualifiers and five alternates--will travel to Castle Rock this Saturday for the WIAA Region I Class 1A wrestling tournament.

CHS's regional qualifiers are senior Sam Mart (215 pounds), sophomore Seth Bell (160) and freshmen Shawn Cabral (103), Brad Spring (112) and Ethan Cranmer (119).

The quintet earned their spots in the regional tournament with top-five finishes at last Saturday's Trico Division championships in Kalama.

Cabral posted the Bruins' top finish, placing fourth in his weight class with a loss by pin to Heath Martin of Stevenson in the match for third place. Mart, Bell, Spring and Cranmer came in fifth in their respective brackets.

Moreover, five Bruins secured alternate positions with sixth-place finishes. They were sophomore Jon Belvin (125), senior Jesse Belvin (130), junior Rees Stevenson (140), freshman Jenson Ladiges (152) and sophomore Jim Price (171). (An alternate is on standby in case a qualifier fails to make weight or pulls out before his first match because of injury.)

Sophomore Kevin Kreps (135) also competed at Kalama for CHS; he wrestled three matches but failed to crack the top six in his bracket.

In the team competition--won by Castle Rock with 410 points--Columbia placed sixth (between Stevenson with 141 and Ilwaco with 60) with 65.5 points.

At the regional meet (one of three taking place statewide on Feb. 10), the top six placers in each of 14 weight classes will advance to the state 1A meet in Tacoma on Feb. 16-17.

The competition for state berths will come from teams out of the SW Washington 1A League's Trico and Evergreen divisions, and the Northwest, Cascade, Emerald City and Nisqually leagues.

Columbia High closed out the regular season Jan. 30 with a double dual meet in Miller Memorial Gym against Trico Division opponents La Center and Kalama.

The Bruins lost to the La Center Wildcats 47-30, and to the Kalama Chinooks 46-33. In other action, Stevenson beat La Center 40-36 and fell to Kalama 42-39.
