Bruins sent home from regional meet

Columbia High wrestlers earned one victory in nine matches at last weekend's Class 1A regional tournament in Castle Rock.

The Bruins' win came on Friday in the 119-pound bracket, in a match between CHS freshman Ethan Cranmer and David Dotson of Rainier. Cranmer won a 6-3 decision over Dotson for the Bruins' only points (2) of the WIAA Region I meet.

In his second match on Friday, however, Cranmer lost on a second-period pin to Orting's Arthur Fetter fifth. Cranmer's tournament ended on Saturday with a 6-3 loss to Daniel Molina of Forks, in the consolation bracket.

Columbia's Jenson Ladiges, Seth Bell and Sam Mart were eliminated on Friday.

Eventual fifth-place finisher Brien Jaksha of Forks pinned Ladiges, a freshman, in the second period of their 152-pound match. Ladiges tried to battle back into contention in his second match, but couldn't overcome Waylon Ocheltree of Nooksack Valley, who posted a 13-3 major decision.

Bell, CHS's entry in the 160-pound bracket, fell to Onalaska's Cody Lambert (who went on to place third) in the second period of their opening-round match. The same fate befell the CHS sophomore in his second-round match against Slade Sterling of Orting.

Mart, wrestling at 215 pounds, met with a first-period pin by Geran Webb of Vashon Island in the first round. The CHS senior made it to the second period of his second-round match before falling to Stevenson's Ethan Rall.

Trico Division champion Castle Rock, which scored 268 points and qualified 13 wrestlers for this weekend's Mat Classic in Tacoma, won the 21-team competition. Second-place Orting (255) garnered 11 state berths.

Stevenson's lone qualifier was Jesse Brown, who placed third in the 171-pound bracket.
