Bruins wrestler gain tournament experience

Nine Columbia High wrestlers found themselves in competitive company last Saturday at the 27th annual Columbia Gorge Invitational wrestling tournament in Stevenson.

Columbia and host Stevenson were two of nine teams that entered wrestlers in the daylong tournament. Hood River, Washougal, Camas, Hockinson, Prairie, Hudson's Bay of Vancouver and Fort Vancouver also were well-represented at the meet, which featured eight-man brackets in all 14 weight classifications.

For Columbia, Jon Belvin (135 pounds), Jenson Ladiges (152) and Seth Bell (160) each won one match.

Belvin opened with a hard-fought 4-2 decision over Alex Freeman of Hockinson.

Ladiges took on Washougal's D.J. McCort in his opening-round match. He led 11-0 before pinning McCort with 51 seconds remaining in the third and final period.

Bell, in his first match, lost a 15-1 major decision to Chris Bishop of Fort Vancouver. But he bounced back in his first consolation match to win a 12-5 decision against Stevenson's Hayes Pestana.

Those three victories earned the Bruins 11 team points.

Also competing for Columbia last Saturday were Shawn Cabral (103), Thor Lundh (112), Ethan Cranmer (119), Kevin Kreps (135), Alex Herschbach (171) and Kyle VanLaar (189).
