Off to good start

Columbia wins fastpitch opener

Rachel Connolly scored the first run of Columbia High's 2007 fastpitch opener Monday at Goldendale, a 15-6 Bruins non-league victory over the Timberwolves.

Connolly finished with two runs scored and was one of three Bruins to collect two hits.

The sophomore went 2 for 3 with a double, while Ericka Ziegler hit two singles in three trips and Kristie Morris had two singles and drew three walks in five plate appearances.

Columbia's big offensive game--the Bruins had eight hits and put 17 runners on base via walks or being hit by pitches--came in support of first-year pitcher Ilima Caldwell.

The junior worked seven innings for the complete-game victory in her first high school start. She allowed eight hits (only two for extra bases), walked seven and struck out two.

CHS's defense also gave Caldwell lots of help.

Bruins Coach Jeff Lindstrom singled out third baseman Claire Stevenson as his defensive player of the game.

Stevenson assisted on four putouts at first base and one at second, caught a fly ball and made a putout of her own off an assist by shortstop Ziegler.

Ziegler also got an assist when she started a 6-4-3 double play that turned on a putout by second baseman Monica Blackmer and an assist to first baseman Morris.
