Playoff loss ends Columbia High's season

Columbia High found no charm in its third meeting of the season with RockON, the girls soccer combine of Mossyrock, Onalaska and Napavine.

RockON, which split the regular-season series with Columbia, made it two in a row over CHS Monday night with its second 1-0 victory--this time in a loser-out match of the Southwest District 1A playoffs played in Kalama.

The goal came in the 19th minute off a direct free kick by RockON midfielder Courtney May.

"After that the game was a stalemate," Bruins Coach Amy Kasenga said. "Both defensive squads shut down the other's offense and we had a battle of two styles of play: RockON loves to play the long ball while we focus on the passing game."

RockON's approach resulted in 14 shots on goal (9 in the first half), while Columbia's produced 11 shots (6 in the first half).

One of the busiest players on the field was CHS keeper Claire Stevenson, who made 10 saves in the losing effort.

With the win, RockON moves on to play Montesano Thursday night in Kalama for a berth in the state tournament. Montesano advanced by shutting out Kalama, 3-0, Monday.

Columbia finished the 2007 season at 9-5.
