The youngest team--with the fewest in number--proved it was the little team that could at last week's second WIAA Class 1B Volleyball Tournament.
Klickitat, a team of one junior, two sophomores, two freshmen and three eighth-graders with a rookie head coach, made it to Friday's trophy round in the Yakima SunDome, where it lost to second-ranked Moses Lake Christian in straight sets in the match for fourth place.
For their two days of effort, the Vandals (11-7) received the trophy for seventh place--Klickitat's eighth trophy in 10 state tournament appearances and first since 2002, when it placed fourth.
First-year Vandals Coach Jaecee Ramsay, a member of three trophy winning squads at Klickitat, including the 2002 team, couldn't have been prouder of the way her team handled itself against its more-experienced opponents.
"They did really great for such a young team," first-year Ramsay told a reporter after Klickitat's last match. "They held things together to begin the season with no seniors, and they improved each day and just did so well."
Standouts for the Vandals during their tournament run were junior Kali Fargher, who doled out 43 assists in four matches; freshman Samantha Brewer, who had 40 kills in the team's first three matches; and sophomore Zoe Lindner, who tallied 27 kills overall.
