In All-Trico voting

Columbia High lands eight on girls soccer, football First Teams

Shannon McNallan became the most decorated player in the short history of Columbia High girls soccer earlier this month when SWW 1A Trico Division coaches named her the league's most valuable offensive player for the second year in a row.

McNallan, a senior midfielder and four-year starter for CHS, was one of 11 Bruins to earn All-Trico recognition for her play during the 2007 season.

Bruins selected for the First Team were senior defender Kaci Kreps, senior forward Naomi Halpern and junior midfielder Whitney Reynier, all repeat selections; junior goalkeeper Claire Stevenson and forward Anne Vilnes, an exchange student from Norway.

Columbia's Second Team selections were senior defender Mackenzie VanLaar, junior midfielders Anna Anderson and Michelle McMillen, and sophomore forward Joanna Villa. Honorable mention went to freshman Laurel Huth.

A team accolade also came Columbia's way in the coaches voting. For the first time, CHS received the league's Sportsmanship Award--an honor it shared with Stevenson.

Senior halfback Taylor Champion had a 2007 season for the Columbia High record book on his way to being named to the All-Trico First Team Offense for the first time.

Champion set the CHS single-season standard for rushing yards, gaining 1,837 yards on 228 carries. Moreover, he ran for 300 yards in two of his 10 games and also scored 23 touchdowns in helping the Bruins come within one victory of qualifying for the Southwest District playoffs for the first time in six years.

Joining Champion on the First Team Offense was senior center Kyle Yeager, another first-time selection who, along with senior linebacker Devin Dean, also earned Second Team Defense honors as a lineman.

Second Team Offense recognition went to Dean as a running back and senior lineman Erick Viramontes.

Senior defensive end Jarin Ladiges and junior linebacker Carlos Mendoza each received honorable mention in the voting by Trico football coaches.

Senior middle hitter Ericka Ziegler was the only Columbia High player recognized by Trico Division coaches in voting for the 2007 All-Trico Volleyball Team. Ziegler was elected to the Second Team.
