Little League:

White Salmon Community Youth teams will get the 2008 Little League season under way at 10 a.m. this Saturday with opening ceremonies at the Center Street Fields Complex.

Soccer Camp:

Columbia High's girls varsity soccer team will again be holding a late-spring soccer camp for young players (boys and girls, ages pre-school through 4th grade), Bruins Coach Amy Kasenga announced recently.

The five-day camp will run June 16-20, from 8-11 a.m. each day, in CHS Stadium.

"The veteran players will teach skills in defending, ball-handling, finishing, goalkeeping and team play," Kasenga noted. "You can't find a better experience for your young athletes."

Prep Track & Field:

Herschel Sanchey of Klickitat posted a personal-record time with an eighth-place finish in the boys 3200-meter race at last Saturday's Pasco Invitational Meet.

Sanchey completed eight laps on the Edgar Brown Memorial Stadium track in 9 minutes, 32.32 seconds. The senior distance standout's previous fastest time in the metric 2-mile was 9:46.26, set last Thursday at a meet in White Salmon.

Also at Pasco, Trout Lake/Glenwood junior Neola Putnam clocked in with season-best times in the girls 800 and 1600 runs. Putnam placed eighth in the 800 in 2:22.98 and 14th in the 1600 in 5:19.89.

Klickitat freshman Samantha Brewer also took part in the Pasco meet, where she competed in the 100 hurdles (19th, 17.16), high jump (19th, 5-0) and triple jump (33rd, 31-1).

For Trout Lake/Glenwood, junior Anna Schmid placed 17th in the 300 hurdles (48.91) and 44th in the 100 hurdles (18.28), and junior Emily Paxson finished 29th in the 3200 (12:50.63).

High School Powerlifting:

Columbia High seniors Jarin Ladiges and Ericka Ziegler won their weight classes March 29 at the 2008 Shelton High School Powerlifting Meet.

Ladiges lifted 1,200 total pounds to finish first in the boys 220-pound weight class by 5 pounds over Isaac Garfias of Shelton.

Ziegler was victorious in the girls 165-pound bracket. She hoisted 700 pounds overall, based on a squat of 265, a bench press of 150 and a dead lift of 295.

Ladiges won his weight class in the dead lift round, edging Garfias, 475-470.

Placing second for the White Salmon girls were Ashley Harper in the 123 class (500 pounds) and Michelle McMillen in the 148 class (555 pounds).

On the boys, CHS's Carlos Mendoza and Zach Mart finished third in the 198 and 148 classes. Mendoza totaled 935 pounds, while Marrt put up 860.

Also competing for White Salmon were Erik Viramontes (4th at 220, 1,035 pounds) and Kyle Yeager (5th at 181, 1,070 pounds).

This year's state high school powerlifting championships will be held on Saturday, May 31, in White Salmon.
